Lambton Fridge Tasting - Margaret River
Mereweather Golf Club
Tasted November 16, 2005 by serialmonkey with 877 views
Introduction
Latest tasting organised by the Lambton Fridge. Non-blind tasting with a fairly wide range of wines and price brackets. Small tastes of each wine shared between Sarah and I. Notes are combined opinions.
Flight 1 (15 notes)
White
2005 Ashbrook Sémillon
Too much Sulfer unfortunately on the nose. Showing some oak work in the body but needs to blow off abit. Give it 2-3 years.
White
2003 Ashbrook Chardonnay
Very nice oak integration. Excellent body and will show very well in a couple more years. Excellent.
White
2004 Brookland Valley Verse 1
Abit simple unfortunatly. Failed to really show any fruit dominance or secondary characters.
White
2003 Brookland Valley Chardonnay Verse 1
Lots of fruit on the front palette but fell off abit on the back palette. Lots of good fruit though.
White
White
2003 Hamelin Bay Chardonnay Five Ashes Reserve
Excellent. Very well balanced. Well suited to it's price bracket. Will be very interesting to see in a couple of years.
White
2004 Willow Bridge Estate Sauvignon Blanc Reserve
At $24 it's overpriced, lots of better NZ Sauv Blancs that show much more character.
White
2005 Flinders Bay Sémillon Sauvignon Blanc
Well balanced with lots of flavour and depth. Larger percentage of Sauv Blanc obvious on the nose. Drink now.
White
2004 Plantagenet Riesling
Disappointing unfortunately, was expecting abit more. Full of flavour bit lacking decent acidity. More of a drink early style, or perhaps a flat bottle.
White
2005 Voyager Estate Chenin Blanc
Very good. Lots of spice for host summer BBQ's. Showing a better example of this style.
White
White
2005 Ferngrove Riesling Cossack
Very good. Lots of character. Probably more of a drink young style, and with this much happening in the glass why not.
White
2005 Ferngrove Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon
Not as impressive as previous vintages unfortunately. Perhaps needs a year in the bottle to build abit more character.
White - Sparkling
2003 Flying Fish Cove
Outclassed in it's price bracket. Huge nose which promises much, but the palette undelivers. Uneven large bubbles don't help.
White
2005 Voyager Estate Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon
Sauvignon-blanc Semillon. Good but showing lots of dominant capsicum flavours on the nose and into the palette. Would probably blow off with some time.
Flight 2 (1 note)
Rosé
2003 Plantagenet Eros
Merlot/Grenache blend. Lots of decent strawberry flavours fill the palette. Very fresh and built well. Good ole summer rose.
Flight 3 (11 notes)
Red
2003 Alkoomi Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label
Very well balanced with heaps of flavour. Built to last. Very good. Absolute steal at this price.
Red
2001 Alkoomi Shiraz White Label
Good but perhaps abit overpriced. Lots of ripe intense fruit. Will most likely grow into it's character with another 5-6 years.
Red
2002 Devil's Lair
Fruit still abit young and green, but overall the palette was very smooth and balanced. Will last forever and only improve.
Red
2003 Watershed Shiraz
Well built and a classic Margaret River example, but unfortunatly lacking any life. Abit simple in structure.
Red
2003 Ferngrove Shiraz Dragon
Unfortunately while it has lots of front fruit it's still missing any character.
Red
2001 Hamelin Bay Shiraz
Showing abit of bottle age, but unfortunately the fruit doesn't seem to be able to hold the distance. Well structured but not overly interesting.
Red
1999 Peel Estate Shiraz
Some odd, funky characters showing in the back palette. Perhaps even abit plasticey. Soft tannin structure showing it's age, perhaps in abit of an "adolesent" stage.
Red
2002 Plantagenet Shiraz
Very classy nose with a smooth and well balanced palette. 5-6 years to show abit more integration. Wine of the night.
Red
2003 Sandalford Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River
Dryness covers the front of the palette. Smokey flavours fill out the length. Shows great promise.
Red
2004 Voyager Estate Shiraz
Excellent deep purple hue's. Lighter style on the palette but showing excellent fruit and flavour. Would suit drinking young best.
Red
2002 Wignalls Pinot Noir
Spicy sandalwood flavours with a balanced bitterness at the back of the palette. Very elegant structure. Drink now, it's at it's peak.
