White
2008 Marqués de Alella Pansa Blanca Alella Spain, Catalunya, Alella
87 points
Very pale. Pear drops and peach aromas, some creamy notes. Fresh, crisp and lively. Lemon sherbert sweetness with a touch of spice on the finish. Nice aperitif. Simple.
White
2007 Raimat Albariño Costers del Segre Viña 24 Spain, Catalunya, Costers del Segre
88 points
Peach aromas with a slight dairy quality. Very bitter, almost salty. Tinned peach flavours, fairly good length with a kick of spice. Interesting wine, needing food to balance the bitterness. Quite complex for the price.
White
2008 Torres Catalunya Viña Esmeralda Spain, Catalunya
80 points
Very little colour, almost water white. Nicely aromatic, very floral with rose water and pear drop aromas. Palate is grapey with a little sweetness and some aniseed. Finishes very dry. This is fairly ordinary lolly water. It only scored 80 because the nose was so nice. Pot pourri is cheaper folks.
White
2006 Celler Cal Pla Priorat Mas d'en Compte Blanc Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
82 points
Burnt gold in colour. Toast, toffee caramel and nutty oak dominant on the nose. Very dry, very nutty, very oaky on the palate. The fruit is masked big time by the wood. Needs time. I am assured it will improve. 82 now, who knows what in the future?!
Red
2006 Castell del Remei Costers del Segre Gotim Bru Spain, Catalunya, Costers del Segre
85 points
Fairly deep core with a brickish rim. Seaweed opens on the nose, lots of iron aromas. Then we get some nice dried fig and a cocktail of berry fruit. Palate has bags of that same ripe fruit with a drying bitter tannin. Slightly roasted methinks and in need of time to integrate. Will improve.
Red
2005 Mas d'en Gil Priorat Coma Vella Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
90 points
Deep and opaque and still quite youthful at the rim. Vegetal aromas initially but with a good deal of careful swirling we get some lovely baked red fruit notes. Palate is tremendously complex, some dusty fruit and tannin, chocolate, vanilla cherry liqueur (especially on the warm finish). Nicely balanced right now, but has plenty of life in it yet.
Red
2004 Cellers de Scala Dei Priorat Prior Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
89 points
Dark and brooding with a slight discolouration at the rim. Strongly vegetal bouquet with a backbone of cassis and black fruit. Berry fruit flavours, ripe and baked. Chewy tannins. This is a seriously big wine - not least the 15% alcohol - and not particularly approachable right now. Mr Parker and his friends in California would probably love it. Me? I'd prefer to wait as all the components are there for a good, if not better, life ahead.
Red
2004 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon (Black Label) Mas La Plana Spain, Catalunya, Penedès
91 points
Deep colour, slightly pink at the rim. Aromas jump right out the glass - cedar, leather, tobacco, chocolate and a good splosh of black fruit. Palate is gloriously silky and smooth. Lots of juicy blackcurrant fruit. Still very fresh and lively despite some secondary characters. Probably just a touch too spirity. Big, but beautiful!
