Dinner at Green Hill
Chez Hutchins

Introduction
We needed to do some research concerning wines in the store. The '90 Monpertuis was just a happy addition
Flight 1 (1 note)
Food: Chips, salsa, gaucomole
White
2004 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie Vieilles Vignes Clos des Briords

Showing well. Clean, bright fruit. Aging glacially.
Flight 2 (2 notes)
Halibut and Scallop citrus salad
White
2001 Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel Blanc

Pretty shocking how bright and clean this was. Didn't have the complexity of the Ex Voto, but was so much fresher. Tasty little bottle.
White
2001 E. Guigal Ermitage Blanc Ex-Voto
Upon opening, this was pretty badly oxidized. The nose never recovered, but after a couple hours that sherry flavor did lessen on the palate. Would have thought it was something older then it was. Rich, glycerol body, with low acidity. I have no idea where this is going, but I'd have difficulty justifying the large price tag that this bottle sells for. Not sure what a "normal" drinking experience would be for this wine.
Flight 3 (3 notes)
Wild Mushroom Cream soup
Red
1999 J.M. Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous la Chapelle

Rather disappointed in this, but it probably shouldn't have been opened for a few years. Very fruity, with bright cherry fruit. Quite tannic and wound up. Never really came around, or opened up sufficiently.
Red
1995 Château de Sales

This was a pretty killer bottle of Bordeaux. Very soft, but still lots of soft, primary fruit. Drank very easy. Full, expressive nose, as well.
Red
2001 Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena
93 points
Just a baby. Upon opening, just a wall of tannins, and difficult to enjoy. Served after decanted for about 4 hours. Pretty smoking bottle. Gorgeous, Barolo aromatics. Really had all the things that I look for from Barolo. Earthy with bright red fruits and just tons of structure. Great bottle. I could spend a couple days with this and be pretty happy. Would love to be able to track this for a decade or so.
Flight 4 (3 notes)
Rosemary and Garlic rubbed Lamb Chops, Bacon flecked Green Beans, Gnochi two ways
Red
1990 Domaine Monpertuis (Paul Jeune) Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This was drinking about as well as I can imagine it ever will or has. This, along with the Pomerol, were the only wines on their sweet spot tonight. It was a rich, seductive, supple wine. The spices, grenache fruit, and structure were all weaving together seamlessly. Just a stunning palate, really expressed the joy of CDP.
Red
2001 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

Had the '03 a couple years back and was one of the best bottles I've had. This couldn't be more different then that bottle, but it was still quite gorgeous. Much more classical N. Rhone, more feminine in body. Really opened up, and the last small glass I had about 7 ours after opened was the best. Beautiful Syrah nose full of black pepper, some herbs, bacon, and more. The palate kept gaining depth, but was tightly wound for the most part. If I had it, I'd probably open my next bottle in 5 years. Great stuff.
Red
2006 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Catena Alta

This showed up late and got thrown in with the 2 Rhones, which was a little unfair, b/c it was just a fruit and oak bomb next to those two regal wines. But there is a ton of fruit and oak on this puppy right now. Give it a couple of years, and let that old mountain fruit shine.
Flight 5 (1 note)
Vegan Brownies
White - Fortified
N.V. União Vinocola Madeira Colombo Old Reserve 10 Years Old

Rich, nice acidity. Lots of nuttiness, and raisins. Tasty stuff.
