MAGMA German Restaurant

Introduction

The resident Oenologist for Markus Molitor, Ms Laura Dreher, came down to talk about the wines made by Markus Molitor. We tasted 3 Spatlese and 1 Auslese from their vineyards. These were all pop and pour from the ice bucket, I took the liberty of warming them up to room temperature and swirled them for quite a bit before evaluating them.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

White - Off-dry
2007 Markus Molitor Wehlener Klosterberg Riesling Spätlese (Green Capsule) Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Nose: Apricots, honey, some grassiness. A little tight as it was just poured. Had an interesting meaty element
Taste: Good mineral backbone, a little light, not as much weight as I'd like but the weight eventually increased as it breathed more. Added profile of sweet pears and a floral finish
Would have preferred a slightly better mid-palate. Could improve with more air.
White - Off-dry
2003 Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese (Green Capsule) Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Nose: Notes of petroleum, lime, floral and steel. Very lush nose
Taste: It was a little soft but with just enough acidity. Notes of pears, honey, slight herbaceousness/earthiness which I like. Nice finish. A little more air gave it better acid and a guava component.
I liked this as it had a bit more bottle age on it.
White - Off-dry
2007 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Nose: Bright but rather tight, even after warming it up a little. Had a slight stoniness to it. About half an hour it gave more aspects including sweaty sock and slight meatiness
Taste: Very good acid, apricots, tangerine peel and a guava finish. Great body and you can feel the creaminess it gets from resting on the lees. Half an hour more at room temperature it gave spicy notes along with some chalk, metal and honey
I enjoyed the complexity of this wine greatly. Sugar was well balanced with the acid.
White - Off-dry
2003 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese * Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Nose: Herbaceous, bright, slight petroleum, citrus and starfruit notes
Taste: Good acid leading to a crisp sweet wine, fleshy apricots, great flint notes and slight spiciness.
I highly enjoyed this wine and would continue to age very well.
