Introduction

A fine night tasting through a fine portfolio of wines.

Flight 1 - Bonus Flight - starter and finish wines (3 notes)

Red
1999 Marqués de Arienzo Rioja Crianza Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
87 points
Strawberry and vanilla flavors, rich and unctuous.
Red
2002 Georges Dubœuf Syrah/Merlot France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
88 points
Very smooth, medium-bodied, with lovely fruits (blackberry and plums) and pepper.
Red
2001 La Vieille Ferme (Perrin & Fils) Cotes de Ventoux France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Ventoux
87 points
Great value, one of my favorite southern French wines year-in and year-out. Herbs and raspberry on the nose, with rpasberry and currant, and a little heat, in the mouth. Very smooth and much fuller than when last tasted last year. Still has some legs.

Flight 2 - Flight 1 – Off-Beat Southern Rhône I: Vaucluse (2 notes)

Red
2002 Kermit Lynch Selections Cuvée Sélectionnée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vaucluse
85 points
For a wine from a sub-par vintage this is a very good wine indeed, perfect as a modest table red. Medium ruby with a nose of spice, pepper, and taspberry. Light- to medium-bodied the fruit is fairly rich, with red fruits, black pepper, and herbs. The wine gains some additional weight in the glass and there is enough tannic grip to take the wine seriously for 1-2 years.
Red
2003 Famille Brunier Vaucluse Le Pigeoulet France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vaucluse
89 points
Plummy in color, with red fruits all over the nose - raspberry most evident, with some red currants. There is a little heat on the palate but the wine is very smooth with licorice and raspberry flavors in this well put together medium-bodied wine.

Flight 3 - Flight 2 - Languedoc I: Coteaux du Languedoc (4 notes)

Red
2001 Château de Lascaux Coteaux du Languedoc France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc
88 points
Nose of herbs, garrigue, and currants. Sweet tannins envelop good fruit in this medium-bodied, well put together wine.
Red
2001 Château St Martin de la Garrigue Coteaux du Languedoc Bronzinelle France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc
90 points
A fantastic QPR. Medium ruby color, with a nose of licorice and cherrt - very fruity and forward. There is a really good definition of flavors on the palate, with cherry, raspberry and licorice, and a sweet leafy, tobacco aftertaste. Medium- to full-bodied the wine is a point now.
Red
2001 Château La Roque Pic St. Loup Cupa Numismae France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Pic St. Loup
92 points
Dark red in color, with dark hues. A complex and delicious nose, and intense flavors in the mouth - dark fruits, and a sweet dark chocolate aftertaste. Has the stuffing to last for years.
Red
2002 Ermitage du Pic St. Loup Pic St. Loup France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Pic St. Loup
83 points
A nose of wild currants, red berry, and black pepper with sweet, disjointed tannins dominating the palate, alongside red berry, currant and jammy flavors. Surprisingly concentrated given the vintage, but almost artificially so, it seems concocted.

Flight 4 - Flight 3 – Off-Beat Southern Rhône II: Lirac (2 notes)

Red
1999 Domaine du Joncier Lirac France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac
90 points
Saturated ruby coloring, with a sweet barnyardy nose, with sweet tobacco leaf with air. Effervescent, almost sweet in the mouth, with raspberry flavors that are almost cloying. A curious wine, but it all hangs together with a lovely balance between and tannins, fruit and acid. Improves fast with air. Even now, Very young and vibrant.
Red
2001 Domaine du Joncier Lirac France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac
91 points
A much more oaky and woody nose than the 1999 tasted alongside it. The fruits are sweet in the mouth - with pepper and herb accompanying the raspberry and cheery - and the finish is drier and longer. Hangs together very well.

Flight 5 - Flight 4 - Languedoc II: Corbières, Faugères and Saint Chinian (4 notes)

Red
2002 Domaine de Fontsainte Corbières France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières
90 points
For the vintage a truly incredible wine and a total bargain for the $12 I paid for it. The nose isn't intense at all, it is elegant and beguiling, with cherry and raspberry aromas, but the sum is much more than the individual parts. Perfumed in the mouth, light-bodied, the wine dances on the tongue, with sweet cherry, blackberry and raspberry flavors. Just wonderful for such a modest wine. If only all southern French table wine was this good. Bravo Domaine de Fontsainte, bravo!
Red
1999 Domaine de Fontsainte Corbières Reserve la Demoiselle France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières
89 points
Dark red in color, with a nose of barnyard, roasted meats, currant, smoke and manure! Medium- to full-bodied, with blackberry and raspberry fruits, in the mouth, with a dark chocolate kiss goodbye. A lot of funk going on, just what I want when I drink wine from this appellation.
Red
2001 Domaine Léon Barral Faugères France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Faugères
90 points
An intense, barnyardy nose wull of rich funk. Blueberry and pepper in the mouth, with very smooth flavors, and grippy tannins on the finish. Improves with air.
Red
2002 Mas Champart Saint-Chinian Causse du Bousquet France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Saint-Chinian
91 points
Dark ruby, almost garnet in color, with an excellent nose of pepper and currants. The wine is seamless and smooth in the mouth, very tasty, with ripe flavors and knock-out Syrah fruit (blackberry, big spicy overtones, lots of black pepper) in a medium to full-bodied, young and evolving, style.

Flight 6 - Flight 5 – Provence: Bandol (1 note)

Red
2000 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale France, Provence, Bandol
94 points
Decanted 1hour. Brickish red with an orange rim. A nose of bacon fat, meat, tar, and barnyard, with more smoked meats on the close. So elegant in the mouth, with raspberry and cherry liqueur. Glorious already. A little heat on the finish, with some funk, but oh so smooth and perfumed. Mouth gripping tannins. After eight hours there is more weight to the wine, it is powerful and tight0knit, still silky, and rich and fruity. Tasted even later on the bacon fat aroma is back, and in the mouth the flavors are even more smooth and seductive. An incredible wine, with finesse and silkiness, and years ahead of it, given the massive tannins.
