2010 Craggy Range Syrah Gimblett Gravels Vineyard

Excellent example of a cold climate Syrah easily bettering examples twice its price. Plum and white pepper on the nose. This gives way to a beautifully rounded and smooth mouthful of currents and plum with nicely integrated pepper and capsicum. Medium long finish with hints of spice is in balance with the rest of the wine. Good stuff.

3/22/22, 2:11 AM - This doesn't age well! Opened in 2022. Now unbalanced with the oak on the aftertaste dominating. No spice apparent anymore. That's interesting. I was expecting it to age well

Yet more proof the French dump their undrinkable dross on us unsuspecting bumpkin convicts. And they charge us royally for the privilege as well. Sharp acidic fruit dominates. It registers a grand zero on the complexity scale with no hints of yeast, toastiness or anything else to lift the wine. Was this even aged on the lees? The finish is medium long but it is just a continuation of the citrus acidity that overpowers all else. I took off an extra 3 points for the profound disappointment. I'm going back to sparkling Tassie wines.

12/22/13, 1:46 AM - It could be the storage conditions. I enjoyed a similarly priced French champagne imported into Australia just last week. My cellar is very consistent but this champagne was gifted to me by a supplier so it could be a dodgy bottle. This was a very ordinary bottle and I honestly wouldn't have picked it in a blind tasting with a bunch of $20 bubbly wines.

1/12/14, 7:49 PM - This one has been puzzling me and I've begun polling my other more learned Aussie friends including some employed as vignerons or studying to become vignerons. We are in unanimous agreement the NV VCP imported into Australia is terrible value. It verges on the undrinkable. I don't think its our storage conditions as many of us are located in the cooler parts of the country with real subterranean cellars. Maybe the importer is storing it in an uncovered warehouse in the Simpson Desert but for whatever reason I'm confident enough to say the VCP imported into Australia is not worth buying.
