Corked but drinkable. Tannins were still evident, acidity was medium (-) , but wet cardboard aroma was somewhat off putting. Fruit was nearly exhausted. Clearly past prime.

2nd bottle of 6, purchased over a decade ago, and last consumed a bottle about 3 yrs ago.
Developing nicely, this Napa Cab is regal, polished, with nicely integrating oak and showing cassis, black cherries, graphite, a hint of mint, and a long and super-refined finish.
Really well made and built to age another decade or so. This is my wife's favorite Napa winery.

Nice, quite tasty WFTM, showing lemon and grapefruit zing with saline and chalk on the tight finish. Med+ acidity, will drink now through 2017 or so...drink while fresh.

The 70's and low 80's ratings of this wine are rather unfounded. "To sweet for red" and "not my style" are not reasons to rate this wine an 84 and 79 respectively. This wine was uncorked with a very dark stain on the cork. 1-3mm of uniform cork bleed all around - cork intact. Probably has undergone a slight amount of fermentation perhaps? The wine was decanted for about 20 minutes with a very purple pour. The nose was a very syrah-esque wine with some sweet black fruit notes. On the entry was a medium to full bodied offering that was spicy from the start. Nice white pepper and fruity blackberry front. A hint of syrah sweetness was shining through. On the mid-palate was a dark almost inky wine where a hint of herbal notes. Finished very dark with a toasted oak. With a pulled pork cobb and black bean spicy ranch salad this one went well. A very good northern Rhone-esque offering. But, I really think this one is probably at its height.

1/12/16, 8:59 PM - Isn't that what ratings are? It is about personal tastes. You either like it or you don't. If the reason is that "it is not my style" couldn't that be a way of saying it is a fruit bomb waiting to explode? The fact is that this wine appeals to the masses. Who am I to judge, right? Well, I'm a judging and I'm a saying it was not a good wine for me.
Final answer: 79 Pts. - It's lucky I gave it that high of a rating

1/15/16, 9:41 PM - I dislike the "agree to disagree" sentiment. Don't you think it is too ambiguous? I actually agree with you. MFlesh, you inspired me to give the Troublemaker another try. It was version 9 as opposed to version 3 from our discussion but strangely, version 9 brought back many of the same memories. Check out my notes on the Troublemaker from today.
In fact, check out all of my recent notes. I've tried to take heed to offer extensive reasoning behind my ratings and thoughts about wines. I welcome you to follow me as I've followed you.

    Troublemaker V.9 Notes:
Day-1 = 68 Pts. - This is actually a generous rating. I tried this again (version 9 today, version 3 in 2012). I got some pushback from another CT member about my previous comment and rating. At the time I scored it at 79pts. saying that "it wasn't my style." The comments from the other members inspired me to give it another try to check my past judgement. I confirmed what I thought before. I actually scored it 11pts. lower than before. This is a wine made for the masses. It is not art. Here is the evidence:
    - Appearance: Deep ruby, mostly clear, giant colorful drippy legs.
    - Nose: Clean, Med+ Intensity. Caramel, nail polish, soy sauce, squid ink, raisin, prune notes with slight undertones of licorice, cherry kool-aide and nyquil cough syrup.
    - Palate: Off dry, no acid, low tannin, full+ body. Cranberry and grape juice with bread and coffee grounds. Very strong blast up front quickly moving to a bland hot mess.
    - Finish/Conclusion: Finish = 9secs.
I gave this one a try again from 3-4yrs ago but I still can find no redeeming qualities. The only good value for this one would be $0. I wouldn't serve this to my guests, family or friends. It might work well for cooking but I can't think of any other use. I'll try again on day-2 and beyond but I've got a headache now.
