The nose is deeper pitched yet pretty with black cherry, licorice, mint/menthol, earth/mushroom, and rose petals, along with a tar note that becomes more prominent as the wine aerates. Quite a serious, complex nose for a lowly Langhe Rosso. The palate is smooth, supple, juicy, and decidedly medium bodied with good nerve, piercing energy, and back end grip with cherry, licorice, tar, spice and leathery notes. Terrific expression of Nebbiolo.

Simply put, this is an exquisite and enthralling syrah. The nose is perfumed, captivating, multifaceted, and evolving with blueberry, blackberry, violets, olive, smoke, spice, and potpourri. Equally impressive on the moderately proportioned palate with terrific ripeness, saturation, nerve, vibrancy, grip, intensity, and length with the dark fruit, purple flower, and olive notes repeating. At once cerebral and hedonistic. 13.9% abv.

Somewhat restrained albeit with a riper, sappier orientation and spicy personality. Medium bodied with just enough acidity to keep the wine in balance. The aromatic and flavor profile consists of allspice, red cherry, kirsch, and a hint of red hot candies. Does not offer the complexity, refinement, focus, verve, or seamlessness that I am accustomed to from this producer. At $134 (current Wine-Searcher price), one can do significantly better. 12.7% abv.

Consumed over the course of two evenings. Austere, closed, and inward the first night. On night two, while still quite young and firm, the wine has opened up appreciably. The aromatic and flavor profile consists of dark black cherry, plum compote, spices, earth, and maybe a hint of rose petals. The fruit expression is pure, controlled, and darker toned with not even a suggestion of warmth or sweetness. In the mouth, layered, concentrated, and saturating with plenty of grip, length, depth, and latent power on the finish. This wine seemingly possesses the raw material for a graceful evolution. A conservative 91 points (reflective of the wine's night two performance), with additional upside likely. 13.1% abv.

Light bodied, fresh, crisp, clean, vibrant, and a bit tart with a profile of citrus, yellow/green apple, minerals, yeast, and toast/brioche. Fun, accessible, and easy drinking if a bit lacking in terms of complexity, depth, and refinement to warrant a higher rating.

Lighter-to-medium bodied, juicy, tart, tangy, high toned, lively, structured, and in balance with notions of red cherries, red berries, earth, underbrush, and a blood orange/citrus pith suggestion that adds a hint of bitterness. There is also a touch of whole cluster derived herbal, stem, and spicy notes, evident more so in the aromatics than on the palate. Finishes with good presence, length, and an understated/underlying intensity. For my palate, these 2011 Rhys pinots are in a great spot and ready to drink. 13.2% abv.

P&P, consumed over four hours. In hindsight, I should give this more air as the last glass delivered the most symmetry and pleasure. A bit restrained aromatically, but the palate is loaded with dark red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, rose petal, and cinnamon along with earthy and herbal suggestions. Shows good concentration, saturation, depth, and persistence on a modestly proportioned frame with an ample spine of acidity that lends crispness and verve. 12.8% abv.

Shows impressive concentration, saturation, layering, and persistence on a medium bodied frame with a juicy, invigorating, and mouth-filling blast of acidity that really anchors the wine. The aromatic and flavor profile leads with savory, earthy, and seemingly whole cluster derived characteristics - pepper, herbal, olive, wood smoke, meat, and forest floor - with the blackberry, purple plum, and violet pastille notes playing more of a supporting/complimentary role. P&P, enjoyed over the course of nearly four hours. 12.8% abv.

Consumed over two nights with the wine exhibiting far greater expressiveness, depth, weight, opulence, focus, and symmetry on night two. The bouquet is soaring, nervy, complex, intoxicating, and marvelous with blackberry liqueur, boysenberry, black raspberry, incense, spice box, and bramble. Full bodied, concentrated, huge, powerful, saturating, and long with a supporting beam of acidity that helps to counterbalance and tame the layers of incredibly juicy, rich, and sappy fruit. I would recommend giving this wine two to four hours of aeration, then let it rip! 16.1% abv.

The aromatics are beautiful, complex, haunting, and dare I say Burgundian with dark red cherries, blackberries, violets, and spices along with earthy and herbal inflections. The palate is equally impressive for its balance, symmetry, textural elegance, refinement, depth, and length with a profile of tart and juicy dark red fruits, spice, and sweet herbs. For a ~10 year old wine, this is still quite fresh and vibrant. First of three bottles. 13.9% abv.

Fuller bodied, concentrated, layered, coating, and complex with an aromatic and flavor profile of cassis, plum, dark berry compote, earth, cocoa powder, cedar, leather, and tobacco. Finishes with good length and grip on fine grained tannins. More secondary than primary in its current orientation and composition, but this wine clearly has the material and balance to continue to age gracefully for many years. This continues to drink beautifully and evolve/mature gracefully. P&P, enjoyed over three hours with the wine really filling out and adding depth and detail after about 90 minutes of aeration. Refined, fine, focused, balanced, integrated, and modestly proportioned with - dare I say - a Burgundian like aromatic and flavor profile driven by tart, tangy and juicy red cherry fruit, forest floor, and earthy notes along with more fleeting and subtle suggestions of herbs/wintergreen, spice, and blueberry. Third and unfortunately my final bottle. 13.4% abv.

Nearly six years since my last bottle, and this wine is in terrific shape and continues to evolve gracefully. The unbridled hyper-ripeness, sweetness, and unctuousness have been tamed/enveloped somewhat. Currently, this wine shows quite full, rich, layered, hedonistic, and nectar like. Finishes with vibrant acidity and a long tail, albeit with slight bitterness to the finish. Offers up a multifaceted and evolving aromatic and flavor profile of pineapple, apricot, peach, petrol, honey, and flowers. Outstanding wine, bordering on profound. Indice 4 designation.

Unlike my previous bottle/note in July 2018, I was able to serve this at a more optimal and cooler temperature and give the wine more time and attention. Aromatically expressive with green apple, lemon/lime zest, and honeysuckle along with a unique (if a bit hard to describe) rocky and earthy quality.
