Compared with the Kiser plots and Monument Tree, I find Copain's Wendling bottling to offer greater weight, intensity, richness, exuberant fruit, and maybe a slightly darker orientation. This 2013 is drinking beautifully with a juicy, riper, tangy, and fuller bodied personality with a nice spine of acidity that adds brightness and verve. Stylistically, this is on the bolder, fleshier, richer, chewier, and riper end of the zinfandel spectrum with notions of blackberry preserves, plum, fig/currant paste, cinnamon, and pepper. Good length on the finish albeit with hints of heat and oak poking through. Nice QPR at ~$19, especially for fans of a more full-throttled, powerfully styled zinfandel. 14.8% abv.

Fuller bodied, concentrated, layered, complex, muscular, and quite long. The aromatic and flavor profile shows ripe and juicy, yet slightly feral and rustic, with notions of kirsch, plum, cherry lozenge, garrigue, earth, herbs, and black pepper. In contrast to some of the other CT notes, I actually thought this showed noticeably less funk/barnyard compared with previous vintages. First of three bottles.

Black and red cherries, rhubarb, earth/underbrush, brown and barrel spices, and herbal notes comprise the aromatic and flavor profile. On the palate, on the riper, sappier, fuller bodied, plumper side for a Rhys, with moderate acidity, fine/softer tannins, and good depth and character. For my palate, solidly in its drinking window. 13.3% abv.

The purity of the red fruit - cherry, raspberry, and apple - is stunning. In addition, notions of spices, flowers, and a kiss of oak/barrel spice/caramel ratchet up the interest and complexity. Juicy, tangy, pretty, and open with a nice spice of acidity that gives the wine terrific energy and tension. The nose is deeper pitched yet pretty with black cherry, licorice, mint/menthol, earth/mushroom, and rose petals, along with a tar note that becomes more prominent as the wine aerates. Quite a serious, complex nose for a lowly Langhe Rosso. The palate is smooth, supple, juicy, and decidedly medium bodied with good nerve, piercing energy, and back end grip with cherry, licorice, tar, spice and leathery notes. Terrific expression of Nebbiolo.

Simply put, this is an exquisite and enthralling syrah. The nose is perfumed, captivating, multifaceted, and evolving with blueberry, blackberry, violets, olive, smoke, spice, and potpourri. Somewhat restrained albeit with a riper, sappier orientation and spicy personality. Medium bodied with just enough acidity to keep the wine in balance. The aromatic and flavor profile consists of allspice, red cherry, kirsch, and a hint of red hot candies. Does not offer the complexity, refinement, focus, verve, or seamlessness that I am accustomed to from this producer. At $134 (current Wine-Searcher price), one can do significantly better. 12.7% abv.
