2008 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sangiovese
1 of 3 wines we had that evening. 20€/27USD in Germany, it was a present. I never had a VNdM but already some other Italian Sangiovese blends. I usually do not favour this style.

14% vol., 85% Prugnolo Gentile, 10% Canaiolo Nero, 5% Mammolino, 18 months in barrique.
Eye: Bright garnet red with a brown touch, obvious signs of aging. Slow legs.
Nose: Liquorice, violet, amarena cherry, mint, herbal, medium intense, concentrated, balsamic. 11/15p.
Palate: Initially very muted, improved within 2 hours in the bottle, medium tannins, medium(+) acidity, soft, smooth, silky, discreet berry notes, herbal, elegant, cool. 11/15p.
Body/Balance: Light-medium bodied, well balanced, good texture. 8/10p.
Finish: Medium finish, dry, fruity, good length. 7/10p.

11+11+8+7(+50) = 87/100p. Overall a very good wine, but still not my style. Those Northern Italians are just too discreet and cool for me.

11/21/14, 1:55 AM - Point taken. Compared to what I usually drink from Italy (Salento, Sicilia, etc.), Tuscany is way more North. But yes, to be precise, this is Middle-North Italy, but it does not alter the rating. ;-)

Full of mega purple, not good

10/2/14, 5:35 AM - Are you serious? Tasting notes like this one are just of no value at all for the community. Please do not rate 75 and then just say "full of mega purple, not good". What exactly do you want to tell the community here? Cellartracker urgently needs quality control in order to avoid useless ratings or notes like this one.

medium red;
balsamic, herbs: lovage leaves, minerals, subtle red and black fruits, almost no barrique;
despite the obvious power this is remarkably elegant and sophisticated: supple tannins, no bitterness, almost refreshing acidity, again balsamic almost Italian twist with herbs, black fruit, very nice, you can taste it's a 2003 but there is none of the overripeness here, excellent PN! 14% but where? alcohol seems to be an afterthought in this one

9/3/14, 3:20 AM - Hi! Did you know that your tasting note was officially used in order to promote a wine on a German online shop? I am not sure whether you are fine with this. This is why I am telling you. Look here: http://www.wine-in-black.de/product/koehler-ruprecht-philippi-pinot-noir-trocken-r-2003-185. I have the PDF here in case you cannot access this any more (or at all). Cheers, Nic

9/11/14, 5:01 AM - Yes, maybe it is not our "poperty" anymore. I have seen overall ratings taken from CT, what makes sense I think. In the end it is "real people" here and no (probably biased) single persons who rate the wines. But single tasting notes, that was new to me! In the end your TN was good enough to promote a wine on a website. So thanks for the kudos but they obviously belong to you. ;-) You pretty much hit the nail's head.

Disappointing. Nice enough taste but heavy and murky for the price.

What's the sugar content? Too sweet. It's evident from the color to the nose to the palate. Too much. Odd.

12/6/13, 1:16 AM - You must have grabbed an odd bottle or so. This one is is really dry with residual sugar tending to 0. Cheers, Nic

This wine is OK, but as many of these "new-higer-quality" wines it seems that the producer tries to include as much as possible in the wine at the cost of clarity and honest transperancy. I'm a little fed up by this attitude.
Maybe 1-2 years in the cellar would reveal a much better drinking experience. Who knows ? - but right now no re-buy at 7€.
  • Nik Lasse Seimsson commented:

9/5/13, 7:46 AM - No offense, but... you say this wine is "OK".
A 87p. rating is way more than "OK". 87 is "very good", according to the common rating system.
By the way, 7€ is a ridiculous price for what is offered and for a 87p. wine.
Please consider this when writing tasting notes. Thanks.

I am stunned by this effort!!! This is to me how Pinot Noir is suppose to be, old world terroir, elegant perfumed, smooth soft round and mindboggeling like a beautifull woman.
Clear light ruby red color, light-medium body, very complex and ooh so beautifull nose with notes of candle wax, eraser, spices and earthy notes, pot pouri roses and oregano, pencil shavings, forest floor and some burnt wood in the backend.
Beautifull burgundian play. Great minerallity on the palate smooth silky mouthfeel well rounded, blackcherrys strawberrys, wet earth and eucalyptus and a nice subtle acidity, long aftertaste what a beauty this is!!
I sad all night sniffing this wine and wondered if it really could be true it was this good, this is by far the best Pinot Noir outside of Bourgogne I have ever tasted and only at 38$
I will most def get my hands on as many of theese as i can. . . 94-95 pts

6/26/13, 8:56 AM - Nice review, really! I feel an urge to taste this Pinot Noir after reading your note. ;-) If you did not have the Chat Sauvage Chardonnay yet this is absolutely a "must try"!

  • Nik Lasse Seimsson commented:

6/27/13, 1:19 AM - Okay thanks, I will remember that. Well basically this winery is around my corner so I can easily get my hands on those wines. You get the Johannisberger Hölle Pinot Noir for around 25€, the "normal" Rheingau Pinot Noir already for 18€.

Red
2010 Cheval Noir St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend
Originally intended to keep this for a few years, but after opening a badly corked 2009, I decided not to keep my single bottle of 2010 and see whether it's any good.
This is not obviously corked, but rather dull and a bitter disappointment nevertheless. Improves slightly after breathing 2 hours but much of it ended up down the drain. Waste of time. I intend to avoid this and all other vintages.
  • Nik Lasse Seimsson commented:

5/29/13, 1:47 AM - Sad to hear the disappointment but I cannot agree. I will write a tasting note. ;-)
