Very nice, old world-style wine. With 13.4 ABV, certainly not in-your-face. I got tastes of blackberry, blueberry, earth, and spice. Warm tannins that helped balance it out and a nice soft finish. Among the more restrained Zins I have had. Great balance and personality in a somewhat refined package. Would definitely buy more if I have the chance.

PnP - cellared since release. Medium light ruby. Right out of the bottle spectacular nose of cherry, crisp apple, and spice cake. Lovely velvety texture on the palate with flavors of cherry predominantly but also blood orange and spice. Long clean finish. This is really good and drinking at peak. My favorite W-S vineyard.

11/3/18, 6:54 AM - It's my favorite vineyard also. I always have to add another bottle or two to my wish list when I see my allocation.

Just opened the 2012 and I believe it has also entered peak.

This is a ripe, full Volnay with both dark and red fruited notes to it. A bit of earth. The best feature is its silky, rich texture. Very pleasant and fruit forward, but not a lot of complexity in the nose or flavor notes. This might mellow a bit with age, but it's drinkable now and I'm not sure it will get significantly better with more time.

1/5/18, 7:53 AM - Thanks for the interesting comment!

When I wrote my note I was implicitly comparing Glantenay's 2010 Cailleret to a Nicolas Rossignol 2011 Volnay Cailleret I had two weeks ago. I much preferred the Rossignol version which had more finesse and complexity to it. But to your point, 2010 as a vintage may not be ready yet for certain producers.

All four bottles purchased from Crush NYC were seriously contaminated with brett.

10/9/16, 6:04 PM - I had exact same issue. I've purchased from Crush over past 5 years, however, and overall my experience with their "specials" has been pretty good.

Popped and poured. Followed over 3 hours. Inadvertently grabbed this bottle enroute to restaurant.

Color is darker then other WS. Nose is quite fragrant with dark Hood River cherries. Masculine. Pure flavors of dark/black cherry, fresh tomato, hint of mushroom, and wet earth. Firm mouth feel that softens dramatically on the very long finish. Nice acidity. Delicious precise fruit.

Delicious. A masculine WS pinot for sure. I think this was a cooler vintage in RRV. Obviously a youngster, but freakin' tasty.

10/28/15, 4:30 PM - Nice tasting note! I agree with the flavor notes you picked up. Wasn't as crazy about the finish but admit it's a pleasure to drink.

A bit closed on the nose, but picking up some cherry and rose petal notes. Medium body but seems more viscous in the glass. Tart cranberry and cherry on the palette with some cola undertones....walks right up to the edge of being candied but toes the line. Smooth finish with red fruit lingering on the palette. Enjoyable but I personally would like more earthiness and minerality. Guess I'll just have to keep tasting through my WS stash until I find one :)
  • SteadyEddy commented:

3/7/15, 5:51 AM - Good note. I actually like the Ferrington as a change of pace from other W-S's because of the sweet fruit - which in a good vintage is very pure.
In my experience, the Allen and Estate bottlings, more so than other single vineyard designates, offer the earthiness and minerality you like, but they need a bit of age to reach full potential. Bucher used to offer this also, but not in recent vintages.

The Verticals Tasting at La Paulée 2015 (Colicchio & Sons, New York): Deep and dark. Exquisite ripeness and sap for this vintage. Gevrey mix of red fruit and soil with a great juxtaposition of great concentration and airiness. I think that this is one of the few truly great 2011s I've tried. A bolt from the blue at the very last table at the tasting.
  • SteadyEddy commented:

2/28/15, 3:14 PM - I got a huge whiff of ash and smoke from the 2011 - obviously from new, toasted oak. The fruit and stuffing in the wine are righteous, but I hope they're big enough to eat the smoke in a few years. This wasn't an issue for the other Chambertin-CdB's.

I agree the Bernstein wines were amazing, but personally I preferred the VR premiers and the 2 Grands Echezeaux this afternoon. Just my preference.

By the way, thanks for posting these notes. Personally I had a hard time trying all the wines in the allotted time and jotting my own notes, and your observations were keen and well described.

The Verticals Tasting at La Paulée 2015 (Colicchio & Sons, New York): Curious mix of odd mintiness, overripe, low acid fruit, and a dilute feel. This may be the most poorly balanced wine I've had from this wonderful winemaker.
  • SteadyEddy commented:

2/28/15, 3:08 PM - The mint on the nose was really striking - like sweet spearmint toothpaste. "Interesting" but not what I'm looking for in this wine. I mentioned it to the somm and got a blank look like I was clueless.
