Tasting note decanted for 4 hours. Total 93 points
Colour deep ruby with pink edges 15/15
Nose Med intensity , primary fruit aromas, Raspberry plum fruits five spice great fruit purity 27/30
Palate med+ intensity, plush fruit juice , dark berries, spice , vanilla, 5 spice , great purity of flavour 40/44
Overall no wonder this is a favourite Penfolds wine , although I can’t understand where the oak/ vanilla flavours come from since there is no new oak used only those big 1500l 50 yo casks
Interestingly 24 hours later the wine had developed further indicating maybe a longer decant may be necessary 10/11

Really wanted to like this but I thought the sulphur use was over the top. I think I understand what this is trying to be, I just think this is an example of heavy-handed winemaking ruining what once was probably very good fruit. Even with time this just refused to open up, displaying only very strong sulphur, and a very chemically sort of vaguely mercaptan smell... it actually made me feel nauseous after having my nose in the glass for a while. I was just so desperate to find something likeable in this wine to justify the price spent on it. Even the palate is shrill and reductive tasting with short length. Bleh. Never again.

Appreciate the honestly of the review. (really like your notes too, just had a glimpse through your other notes and they are very concise and informative)
I'm still tempted to buy it just to see if I find the same characteristics of the wine, but probably won't! lol

Just to clarify, when I said "I probably won't!" I meant I probably won't buy, not I probably won't agree with your note!
I didn't end up bidding for it either.
If you get a chance, and haven't already, the winemaker behind Oakridge has another label called Toolangi which produces some great chardonnay in my opinion. A bit more finesse, a little more subtle on oak and malo but at the same time great concentration and quality fruit.
    Cheers, Nic

Superb.
The nose is beautiful and from there it just gets better.
Bursting with so many different flavours its a complex masterpiece.
Constantly evolving in the glass.
Should have plenty of years ahead of it and should improve, if that even possible.

5/14/17, 7:18 PM - no decant, opened about an hour prior to consuming
poured a small glass to taste and decided to just let it audouze

purchased as a museum release from DM is well into its drinking window. Looking at the other Leo Buring 2005 I purchased on release, I remain convinced that (a) wines develop more slowly in my cellar and (b) DM isn't keeping their museum release wines at a comparable low temp.
