Here is a completely different Rose.

Starts with a punchy sulfur funk note as if one is standing next to an active volcano caldera. Then, notes of bee's wax, smoke, and exotic spices. Subtle fruit of preserved lemon, red cherry and red berries is quickly overwhelmed by salty and savory midpalate and finishes with some peppery note.

Medium minus body, medium acidity.

Volcanic soil of Canary Island left a powerful signature on this wine. It's a tangy and salty rose like no other. Maybe, the closest I can think of is Etna Rosato.

If you bring this to a Rose tasting, half the people will hate it and the other half won't be able to stop talking about it. That kind of wine.

I tend to like it a lot except I only wish the finish was a bit dryer. For me the finish is what is causing me to hesitate! I have some salumi pizza and eggplant rollatini with marinara in the oven let’s see what happens…

Just bottled about a month ago. Young vineyards outside of the Morgon appellation. Mostly on fruit notes, digest. Summer terrasse wine!

5/21/23, 6:31 PM - This is NOT the screw cap offering from Lapierre….it’s declassified Morgon thus the price. I’m currently having the 2022 it’s tasty.

Nose of fresh-cut flowers (lilacs?). Steely, flinty, wet rock up front, transition to plush stone fruits and poached pear before going to a citrusy tangerine lemon-lime finish with a hint of wildflower honey. Pretty nice showing for French chenin.

4/19/23, 8:53 PM - Opened one tonight. It’s EXCELLENT. I kept thinking this is the type of wine that should be my house white but at $40 per bottle that’s tough. Lovely wine.

82% Negrette, 6% Cabernet Pfeffer, 6% Zinfandel and 6% Albariño. Interesting blend. Bought on a whim at a local wine purveyor in The Town based upon the fact that Stirm is behind the label. The Negrette definitely comes through as I recall previous tastings of the grape from Fronton (specifically one imported by the great Charles Neal). In this case it is not as feral as it’s French counterpart. It feels tamer and more floral but Negrette it is. Dark fruited, mouth coating and a tannic bite at the end that I’m enjoying quiet a bit even though it’s “13.5-13.8% abv” per the producer web site and label. Tasted great alongside spicy chicken, potatoes and rice. Curious to see how it’ll taste in 24 hours…

2/18/23, 7:20 PM - Great to hear! That was a nice wine. As mentioned you don’t see too many Negrette dominant wines on the market. Charles Neal imports/used to import one 100% Negrette from Fronton unfortunately I haven’t seen it at any of my local wine shops in a few years. It retailed for around $15 maybe 4-5 years ago. I’ll inquire about it next time I’m at the shop. Thanks for your reply 👍🏾

2020 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Nebbiolo Langhe Langhe DOC
No bruiser of a Langhe Nebbiolo, the 2020 Burlotto showcases the lifted, bright shade to the grape. It has structure and depth and intensity, but it’s nuanced and quiet about it. The robe is bright garnet to the rim. The nose offers a sparkling array of forest berry (high bush cranberry and salmon berry come to mind), blackberry blossom, and subtle, cooling wintergreen aromas, with just a whisper or tar and (wild) roses. The palate is similarly filigreed, with red fruit and fine-grained structure seemingly acting as a top-note, rather than serving as a foundation with the fruit taking up the rear. But there’s excellent drive and fine length here and far from seeming insubstantial, this has the high kicking athleticism of a ballerina, as opposed to a more brooding strength. There is likely more here that will be revealed on day two, but it’s pairing admirably with a pan-roasted veal chop with black trumpet mushrooms and braised broccoli. Delicious, though based on this bottle after a short decant, I’d peg it as Alto Piemonte rather than good ole Langhe. Not that it suffers for its liveliness—it’s absolutely delicious. Re-buy.

7/16/22, 8:43 PM - Spot on the Alto Piemonte mention! This could stomp even seasoned pros as a Gattinara or Bramaterra which is a COMPLIMENT in my book 👍🏾 Cheers

I much agree with the prior notes. This is no baby barolo, but rather a wine made to showcase a fresh and almost delicate side of nebbiolo. Very enjoyable, but I could almost want for a bit more structure.

7/16/22, 8:36 PM - Spot on! Just popped and poured expecting some tannins alas Produttori Barbaresco’s rendition but instead was pleasantly surprised by the softness of the wine. Could be mistaken for a Northern Piemonte Nebbiolo.

This wine pours light ruby in the glass with flecks of purple toward the rim. The nose is of tart rasapberries, cranberries, and very faint notes of bay leaf, dry dusty soil and animal fur. The palate is light and very tartly acidic. It feels like tough malic acid (which I recognize is extremely rare in red wines so it is unlikely here), and a bitter green apple peel finish. While I applaud the light and elegant style, there really is no complexity here and the tart acidity and bitterness really take over the palate, holding this back.
  • Pez Lobo commented:

7/8/22, 8:58 PM - I agree with your whole note. It’s interesting that you think the finish holds it back, in my case I enjoy the acid finish which is why I gravitate towards Savannieres and Etna whites. I’m intrigued that high acid in a red can be deemed a negative whereas in whites it can be prized.
