1991 Gentaz-Dervieux Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Réservée Côte Brune Syrah
Thin wine. Not corked. Not much on the palate. Some very attenuated pleasant flavors for a second on the mid palate then the wine disappears. This may have been an off bottle

Had a group of wine geeks over last weekend. One friend asked if he could pull anything from my cellar and serve it blind. This is what he got. He pulled this cold from the cellar and after he pulled the cork decided it probably should be decanted. The wine had not been stood erect. Initially I thought it was a Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley in a lean year. After about an hour it began to warm up and open up. Tar, leather and wet earth. I have had this wine once before and it was first rate. I'll never know what this wine would have been like if treated properly.

I have had this wine many times and it has been consistently excellent. Utterly complete! It took 4 hours in a decanter to hit its stride. Wet earth, leather, raspberry and rose petals, a hint of tar and cinnamon. Very long on the palate. Lovely.

    8/13/19, 4:00 PM - Hi,
I got my wine from the same shop in NYC. I’ve purchased it on several occasions over a few years. So I can say that it was imported into the US different years but don’t know whether the original source in Italy was the same. Hope that is helpful. I can say I’ve found the 1958 to be less consistent.

Drank this along with a 1961 Dom Perignon. The reason I paired this is because it came from a private cellar in England and they knew that the wine was originally purchased in the 60's. So this being a 1960's wine I thought the comparison would be interesting . This was really first rate. A very similar flavor profile to the Dom with sherry, hazelnut, mushroom and wet earth flavors. There was a good mineral background with very good acidity. Very long on the palate and improved over time. There were some people in the group who preferred the Lanson to the Dom Perignon. I am not sure this note will help anyone who is looking at a modern Lanson though.

8/12/19, 2:35 PM - Hi, sorry for the belated reply but I did not have an answer - so I queried a friend who was at all our dinners last week. He says that the Lanson family owned the champagne house up until the mid 1980's after which it was sold several times to various conglomerates. Prior to that time the family farmed their various holdings themselves. After it was sold the conglomerates sold off the vineyards and Lanson House no longer farms their grapes but acts as a negotiant and purchases everything - thus the change. That's all I've got.
