I found this wine harsh. To my taste, it was far too much alcohol, which overpowered all of the other characteristics. Certainly it requires a good bit of airing to be palatable.

Anyone feel the new release price on the Elysian is high along with other releases? Years past they have flown off the “shelf” with an allocation of 3 max but now with an allocation of 6, you can still buy. It never use to get to second tier allocation available. I’d love to support Mike and Leah because they are great people and at this price it’s becoming unobtainable for their long time supporters. Just me thinking this?

1/17/24, 7:42 AM - Glad to hear I’m not the only one. Guess this just means that I need to hold everything I have for special occasions since I won’t be replacing much. I will say that Becklyn has done a decent job of keeping prices a little lower.

Lockestep - what are some of the other wineries that you are starting to buy from? I’d love to find another small producer to support.

    Anyone else have some recommendations?

First experience with this Winery - a pleasant surprise. Sourced from two vineyards - Star Vineyard in Rutherford and a vineyard in the hills of south Napa. Fruit forward and fairly rich - reminds me quite a bit of the entry level Lewelling cab. Dark ruby fruit - currants, blackberry, dark cherry, and a little blueberry. Really smooth with a nice purity and decent depth/concentration. Nice rich flavors of dark berries, baking spices, cocoa, and a little graphite component. Fairly long finish. Popped/poured but drank out of a decanter for a couple hours. Improved with time but drinking well right away despite its youth. A decent QPR at $55. 92+. 100% cab.

1/27/23, 7:22 PM - $37 per bottle for their 2019 right now on Vivino. Bad monkey always has some good reviews so think I might have to jump on this one.

Good stuff for a tough vintage but maybe one of their best efforts. 94/95 Points

Story time. I was at arrow and branch, having a lovely tasting with friends. And our host asked if we had ever had a better expression of the Dr. Crane vineyard. I reached into my wine bag and pulled out this bottle!

I hadn’t had it before. We opened it. Immediately, fuck, the nose is so slutty. Next, the alcohol hits you hard - it’s so hot on the nose. But the plush, hedonistic fruit can’t be stopped! There’s so much, a stark contrast to the A&B.

Overall, drink this stellar wine now. It’s not going to age for 10+ years.

P.S. how do I mention others here?

Decanted for one hour on day one and it came across somewhat disjointed and a little tart/tannic with the finish. Revisited on day three and it improved quite a bit. Purple fruit - currants, blackberry, dark cherry, and some blueberry. Smooth mid-palate with solid depth/concentration. Nice flavors of dark berries, cassis, and some spice/licorice. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep, however, the tartness did subside. Like the 2019 Quivet Kenefick Ranch cab, I believe this wine was still in somewhat of a really youthful/barrel tasting phase late last year and now needs some time to develop. I’m going to lay the other bottles down until at least the end of the year. Nonetheless, a lot of promise in light of its showing on day three - 93 rating on day three. 100% cab.

Curious if people are buying Myriad's 2020 release of Dr. Crane and Dr. Crane Elysian. Not only are they releasing the wine but they increased the price! Thoughts?

1/6/22, 8:37 PM - I have no doubt that Mike and Leah would put anything out there that isn’t the best of their work. They aren’t trying to be the big dogs on the street and just make a buck, they do what they enjoy. I also haven’t heard of increased pricing for this vintage. I know they did a little increase with the extra allocation release after shipping was done but that can be expected with little inventory and high reviews.

  • MRonan83 commented:

1/7/22, 7:19 AM - My allocation doesn’t open up until the 11th but if prices are $175 and $195 then it’s a $10 increase. 6%. That’s under the current rate of inflation. Everything is getting more expensive these days.

I am just not a fan of new world style Napa Cabernet. I have more of this and some Becklyn and Quivet. If anyone is interested, message me and I will make you a deal on it.

Dark chocolate, vanilla, red and black cherries and plum on the nose. Light and fruity on the palate, especially for a Cabernet Sauvignon. Out of balance with overwhelming acidity. Short, bland finish. At this price point there are better options.

Just down right amazing. So much fruit, so smooth, so perfect. Drank next to a Caymus and my wife enjoyed this much more. Should have gotten more. Hope the 2017 is just as good.
