1987 Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend

The last label of a great man so I purchased a case.

The 1987 Château Mouton Rothschild stands as a testament to the harmonious convergence of terroir and winemaking expertise. Like a mystical melody plucked on my 1964 telecaster, this vintage resonates with the spirit of the earth, evoking a sensory journey that transcends time and space.

In essence, it blew me away. But you have to pull it out of her and that requires patience....glass by glass.

Enjoyed the entire bottle solo over a high stakes poker match where I happened to lose the final hand of the night to a four of a kind when I had a damn Ace high spades flush.

To make it worse, I lost to a stuck up liberal doctor buddy who rolled over his 4 queens as I was reaching for my chips; and he did it with all of the slobber and vigor one expects of a white collar 30 something donk.

However the beating faded as the velvety wine cascades into the glass, a rustic amber hue dances with the light, reminiscent of a setting sun on a summer evening. Aromas of the wild embrace the senses, as if an earthy troubadour strums a weathered guitar, releasing notes of dried leaves, forest floor, and crushed autumnal herbs. A gentle waft of tobacco leaf intertwines with the ethereal scent of freshly turned soil, evoking a connection to the land and the soulful rhythms of nature.

The 1987 Château Mouton Rothschild is a free-spirited wine, unbound by convention, that embraces its natural origins and it needs to be babied. Its medium body and silky tannins embody a graceful dance, akin to a barefoot wanderer swaying under the moonlit sky. The wine's textured mouthfeel envelops the palate with a velvety embrace, leaving a lingering presence that echoes like a resonating chord in a harmonious melody.

This vintage, like an old vinyl record played on a vintage turntable, whispers stories of the past and promises of the future. With its well-integrated acidity and gentle evolution, the 1987 Château Mouton Rothschild invites contemplation and rewards patience. Its mellowed elegance and complex layers continue to evolve, offering a psychedelic journey for those willing to embark on a voyage through time and terroir.

A true masterpiece, this 1987 Château Mouton Rothschild is a symphony that transcends boundaries, fusing the earthly elements with the transcendent beauty of music. I was nervous about this wine (purchased at auction) but stood up a day ahead of time, decanted and poured a glass. Initially the sulfur and wet earth but after 35-40 mins began to open up in the glass with continual swirling and forced the tutta bella pizza from Italy come alive.

Earth and wet moss with dampened berries. Poured another glass out of the decanter and again took 20-30 to open up with constant swirling but it was amazing when it did. In my humble opinion as a peasant, ready to drink now.

Decant: 1-2 hrs OR decant and finesse glass by glass. If with friends, blender for 5 mins.....

Brioche, lemon, nicely developed. Great PQR at ~€20/bottle

A special bottling made with old-vine fruit only in exceptional vintages. Fermented in concrete tanks, aged on the lees for 9 years before bottling. Bottled unfiltered. 12,5% alcohol, 3 g/l residual sugar and 9,5 g/l acidity. Tasted blind.

Pale whitish-green color. Somewhat restrained, slightly sweet-toned and subtly dull nose with aromas of juicy exotic fruits, a little bit of earthy spice and a hint of creamy leesiness. The wine feels thin, somewhat metallic and a bit dull on the palate with a medium body and reticent flavors of apple peel bitterness, some salty brackish tones, a little bit of something dull, light leesy notes of creaminess and a hint of tart lemony citrus fruit. The bracing acidity lends great, incisive energy to the wine but doesn't bring much intensity to the flavors. The finish is short, tart and quite austere with flavors of something metallic, a little bit of key lime, light dull notes of damp wool and a brackish hint of sea water.

Eh. A very dull, understated and thin Muscadet that really doesn't show anything interesting despite being aged for a whopping nine years on the lees. As the wine was served blind after a pop'n'pour, I wonder if it would've performed better with proper aeration. This was a very disappointing effort and the least enjoyable of the three Muscadets we tasted blind side-by-side. The wine feels quite expensive at 18,10€, so the local retail price (35,69€) doesn't make any sense.

8/5/23, 1:20 PM - The answer is yes, after half an hour the wine opens up to a very good example of a better Muscadet created by an experienced winemaker.
However, my bottle, bought in October 2022 and opened August 2023, was lemony yellow. Same dull, restrained nose with just a slight note of lemon oil. In the mouth the wine tasted also dull and restrained, somewhat shut down with little acidity; good body with a slight butter oil feel to it, nothing thin. After 1/2 -hour it opened up and the acidity came to life. Nothing metallic or brackish; not the lest bit leesy either given the time on the lees.

Shared a bottle with a long time friend who has probably drunk more Scheurebe than the rest of the global population combined. We both agreed that the wine was good but nothing special.

Still don’t get what people see in this.

Interesting and tasty wine, though I honestly don’t see what all the fuss is about. It tastes like Scheurebe (kinky beast that it is - sage, grapefruit, apple skin and a touch of cannabis fritter), and has good acidity. I don’t get the depth that was in the HGS Scheurebe wines. It’s fun, but doesn’t have an extra gear beyond that.
  • Sillywizard commented:

6/17/22, 11:16 PM - HGS? Whom are you referring to??

Alas, where to find the second best Scheurebe, ever? *sigh*

Nice nose - cherries and earth. Good acid and spice from the whole cluster fermentation (~50%). The S&B isn't my favorite ABC pinot, but a good wine.

In good old Germany we start Christmas this evening, awaiting some family crowd so what is best for a good start?
Right! Serve a well cooled crowd pleasing sparkler at first!
For me there are always two choices from the "main" Champagne producers,
if I do chose a Brut I choose Pol Roger mostly, when I comes to Rose this one,
so pnp this about 3- 4 years old bottle from my cellar,
showing very fine mousse, chalky fresh nose with raspberry,
good weight, flow and Structure here, all components well balanced, light- to mid bodied, delicate raspberry fruit, silky limy flow, layers, good length, recommended!
Would recommend to let your NV bottles sleep for some years in your cellars, will gain more harmony!
  • Sillywizard commented:

12/25/20, 1:16 PM - This is so true; buy a few bottles/case of a good NV champagne and cellar them/it three to five years and one will have great champagne to drink and enjoy! Cheers!
