Made by Rodolfo Cosimi under the Terra Rossa label.
100% Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello Clone)
48 months of bottle ageing on its yeasts. After disgorging, the wine ages for a further 9 months before it is released. Only 4,000 bottles produced.
In the glass almost rose gold, very pale straw color with very light copper hues.
Very unique on the nose with hints of more savory qualities. Notes of dark bread crust, nut shells, dried herbs, dried rose petals, dusty earth and notes of white cherries, white peach, fuzzy stone fruit skin, golden raspberry and white currant with hints of salty minerals and stony earth.
The palate is as interesting as the nose. The wine shows high toned acidity that is long lasting on the palate and plays against the moderate tannins/phenolics that play on the front palate. The bubble structure is tight and expands on the palate. Flavors of tart white currant, Rainer cherries, peach skin, dried rose petal, bread crust, mixed nuts, herbs, saline and earth. The savory and dry finish lingers.

I didn’t get a ton off of this, some crunchy red fruit, a little baking spice — it tasted oddly simple compared to what I expected. Possibly kept too long or maybe on the downhill, hard to say.

6/11/23, 5:31 PM - I tend to agree with you. The bottle I had last night seemed simply compared with previous bottles.

This has turned out to be quite cellar worthy but I find the fruit a little less appealing now than a year ago: plum and cassis vs the blackberry and fruit de bois of its youth. Storage conditions may be a factor. I took this out of limited wine fridge storage a year ago.
  • petermpls commented:

6/19/22, 7:41 PM - Agree with your comment but I'm not sure that this is a storage condition issue. My 2011 has been stored at a consistent 58 degrees. FWIW it reminds me of a lightweight Amarone.

Bottle four of six. All four have been undrinkable vinegar.

8/8/21, 11:42 AM - Sorry to hear that your experience across all 4 bottles so far has been awful. Back in February, I emailed Garagiste about this wine - highlighting all the notes and my own experience. I concluded my email as follows: "I've been a member of Garagiste for a long time and purchase a lot of wine from you all. I've never encountered a wine that deviated so much from what was stated in Jon's notes. Is this really the same wine that Jon tasted?"

I plan on sending a summary of the 6 bottles after I open my last one.

7/19/21, 3:57 AM - I noticed that my tasting note had a 93 rating - not sure how this happened. Removed the rating. It's certainly not a 93 point wine but at least bottles 2 and 3 have been enjoyable.

Too acidic. More like vinegar. And I have 5 bottles left. Ugh!
  • petermpls commented:

2/19/21, 8:54 AM - Or some kind of classic French Chicken with Vinegar saute. This wine is so far off that I'm tempted to send Garagiste an email. I've ordered other natural wines from Garagiste before and sometimes they are quirky but never have I had one that deviated from the description so greatly.

2011-- Complex, spicy Côte Rotie nose, dark fruits, mint, and licorice, dried cherry and fig, cocoa, lightly oaked. Good acidity in the mouth with a Big Bang, expanding intensity effect, medium long finish, a bit hot and baked at the end. Tannins are Bordeaux-like but moderate and tamed. I did not decant but recommend decanting for an hour at least. 92-93

2012 -- This is almost identical in profile to the 2011 but gets there more effortlessly. The dark berry, fruity, minty aromas are fresher. Easygoing and generous with a Napa Cab sensuality to it. Slightly more forward and minty, smoother, and weightier in the mouth, with a nice, refined dark chocolate finish. Double decanted. 94

2014 -- This needs another one to four years and was like drinking a great Syrah or Cab too early. The tannins are rich with a pronounced edge (but not fierce by any means). Bold notes of cedar, blackberry, cassis and licorice, with clove and cardamom. Tremendous sense of spice, substance, and extract, integrated well enough, albeit still en route to a more elegant expression. Double decanted 4 hours. 92-95

2016 -- One can taste the refined and complex 2011 lurking inside this lively animal, bursting with rich aromas and flavors. Like the 2014 there is loads of fruit and spice, but it already seems better integrated than the 2014. Still wait a few years. Double decanted 4 hours. 93-94

The 2012, 2014, and 2016 all seem built for 10 years. The 2011 seems in a peak drinking window now.

This wine is showing absolutely beautifully right now. It was difficult to open (cork broke upon opening!) and we decanted through a filter funnel, but the juice was top notch.
Nose was powerful, really dark and heavy. However, no distinct aromas were discernible.
In the mouth - nice, elegant fruit (plums, olive, licorice?). Also nice minerally tannins on the middle-to-end of the flavor arc. Very well balanced with a medium-long finish.

I liked it, crisp and bitey, but overpriced at $21. One of only a few times I've had the Greco grape.

Bone dry. Smokiness, ripe exotic fruits. On the palate slightly bitter, reductive, angular. Some chalky minerality in the background. Lacks fruitiness. Probably slightly corked.
  • petermpls commented:

12/6/15, 6:32 PM - My notes are similar even down to the possibility of a corked bottle. I wonder if there's a bad batch of corks here. I have had other vintages of this wine and this vintage's profile is a bit different and not in a good way.

Let's just say I didn't enjoy this wine, there was an urgent matter and the wine was open the whole night vacuum sealed and drank 5 days later. Based on the comments, I agree to not rate this wine after 5 days and I'm retro-actively rating like my previous tasting.
  • petermpls commented:

4/29/12, 5:47 PM - Placing a score on a wine after letting it sit 5 days in an open state is misleading. You should eliminate the score so that others are not deterred from purchasing this wine based upon an aggregate score.

Definitely get the latex smell others have mentioned, especially when opened; the longer its been open the more this has faded. I don't taste latex, however, but I do taste tart lemon an lime, or very tart green apple. Quite dry. Has the weight of a chardonnay. Nice long finish. The wine definitely grew on me the more I drank it the more air it got. Not bad, definitely interesting, and not a bad price overall. Will sit on two more bottle, and see what evolves.
  • petermpls commented:

10/18/11, 6:57 PM - My tasting notes would mirror Michael's. Don't think I would buy again though.
