Still very young. Very little going on after the first hour open, so set aside and another bottle opened in its place. Tasted 3-4 hours after opening, has blossomed into a classic Pomerol with a beautiful balance of tannins, fruit and acidity. Will taste remainder tomorrow, but at this point I must regard this as drastically under-rated by the critics both in terms of quality and longevity. Depending upon tomorrows showing, may look for more as I suspect this to be quite affordable in toeday's market.

Eleven 1998 St Emilions and a Lone Pomerol. Maybe some Yquem too (Bethesda, MD): I knew this wine would be special when I opened it and smelled the wafting perfume emenating from the bottle and the cork. The wine has the most character on the pallate, with a lovely bell pepper quality most likely derived from cabernet franc (50% CF, a record for V at the time of this note). The pepper driven green tannin aspect was simply superbly balanced and wonederfully compact. It has such a regal pitch to its nose and such poise in the glass. With swirling, there are notes of briary blackberry and sweet cocoa. In the mouth, there is wonderful depth and plushness to the mouthfeel, with hints of pure red fruit. Simply outstanding with more upside. It makes me want to seek out more cab franc from the vintage (Cheval anyone?). My red WOTN by far.

    4/28/10, 2:23 PM - Nice note,
I was wondering what your opinion is about the drinking window of valandraud. Is the wine already showing mature notes? Former CT notes encouraged to already open the bottle since it was delicious while still young. Had Pavie 98 a year ago and had a same experiance as you. Was very good but not great, and could use some more years of aging
