April 12, 2024 - Wild mix of red and dark fruit. Some bacon fat and cured meat. Earthy finish. This is unique in a wonderful way.
July 26, 2023 - Amazing nose consistent with the other Cayuse I've had.
This is quite 'heavy' so would never have guessed this as a Grenache wine!!
May 13, 2023 - Still drinking well. A bit overpowered by the other Syrah based wines in the tasting. Drink.
August 28, 2022 - In a beautiful place, mild Rocks funk on the nose that virtually disappeared after a two hour decant. Elegant, juicy, paired perfectly with paella.
June 25, 2022 - Small pour around a bonfire end of the night. No formal note taken.
Well this was a great way to end the night with friends. Raspberry, cured meats, bacon fat, wet soil. There is a LOT going on with this and everything is in harmony. Great bottle; just excellent.
June 25, 2022 - Rose's on the Deck: A Summer Party (Matt and Brenda's, Minneapolis, MN): Oh heck yeah. A bonus red at the end of the night thanks to Matt and Brenda. Stunning aromatics, fleshy, sappy raspberry, bacon fat, funk and damp earth, poised and very long. This is a captivating wine. 93+ to 94pts.
February 21, 2022 - Delicious. Light to medium garnet in the glass with a mild nose of red fruit, barnyard funk and damp forest floor. The palate has piercing notes of wild raspberry, tart cherry, toasted peppercorns and Provençal herbs. Acidity is firmly present with resolved tannins and a mild mineral/saline note on the finish.
January 20, 2022 - B60; G5; 4.5+8*+4*+8.5+8.5+4*+4*=92+; Tasted from Burgundy and Bordeaux glasses. Medium red garnet with no signs of bricking. Highly perfumed (floral) with earth and red cherry from the Burg bowl. Much less aromatics, more initial Cayuse funk with high-toned red fruit from the Bordeaux glass. Really preferred the Burg bowls over an hour of sampling from both styles of stemware. Mouthfeel was smooth, good acidity, but with a vinegar sensibility. Flavor predominantly red berry, red (nearly tart) cherry with an acetic acid dance that was mildly surprising and a bit off-putting. Add in dark chocolate non-sweet cherry cordials and a dusty, smoky cherry on Day 2 with the acetic acid gone and everything starting to homogenize nicely. Medium-long finish with good cherry-fruit penetration. Are you starting to sense this is all about cherry, but in all its not sweet, not jammy variations? Balance was initially off for the first hour+ on Day 1 and I was kind of concerned, but in the end I trusted the wine to come together and it did. This is doing very well at 11-years, ready to drink with some fussing and should be good for at least another 5-years. Definitely use Burgundy Bowls.
December 18, 2021 - Uncorked 3 hrs before drinking without food, consumed over 2+ hrs. plugged with one of the highest quality corks anywhere, could last lifetimes!
A: Funky G(renache) pomegranate, strawberry, bok choy, black jelly beans, funky not the meaty type, almonds.
P: The funk tastes like pyrazines as if there's some Cab Franc in the mix, silky polished texture, similar flavors to the nose. Medium-minus to lighter bodied with the grenache acids nicely tamed, noticeable but not biting. No sediment.
This easily lasts thru 2025 and could show well into the late 2020's.
November 26, 2021 - WIML93
