Rose's on the Deck: A Summer Party

Matt and Brenda's, Minneapolis, MN

Tasted June 25, 2022 by rocknroller with 215 views

Introduction

In what we can only hope becomes a annual tradition, Matt & Brenda hosted a summer rose themed party. We had a group around 20 gathered with an embarrassment of rose riches that nicely represented a variety of styles and regions. Everyone provided some delightful summer fare for snacking along with our wines. Thanks to Matt & Brenda for hosting and putting up with us all, not to mention the many bonus bottles around the fire pit. The evening seemed to slip by so quickly; that is always a good sign. All wine notes are brief and from memory.

Starting off the rose event with a bang. Always a favorite, this has lovely red berry fruits, just the right dosage, finessed and classy.

N.V. H Blin & Co Champagne Rosé de Saignée Extra Brut France, Champagne

Deep cherry red color. This is a bolder, bigger styled Champagne, sappy cherry fruit, chalk, somewhat clunky, and a little bitter on the back end. Needs some food for sure.

2018 Johan Vineyards Pinot Noir Rosé USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium pink color. Red cherry and citrus, a little bolder but still nuanced. Very solid.
Rosé
2020 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Rosé de Pinot Noir France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Deep cherry red color. Not really what I would expect from PYCM, and I have to say I find the high scores somewhat exuberant and rather amusing. Totally fruit driven and forward, sappy cherry and not a lot else to say. Tasty, but very straightforward; this could easily have been from California.
Rosé
2020 Nervi-Conterno Il Rosato Italy, Piedmont, Piemonte DOC
91 points
Pale pink color. This got my attention tonight; nervy and steely, excellent mineral definition, nuanced red berry fruits and stone fruit. Elegant. Loved it and would have gone back for more. 90+ to 91pts.

Rosé
2019 Bodegas Los Bermejos Listan Negro Rosado Spain, Canary Islands, Lanzarote

Medium pink color. Lots of citrus, cherry, minerally, dry extract and tannins. Works better with food.
Rosé
2019 Domaine du Bagnol Cassis Rosé France, Provence, Cassis
92 points
Pale pink color. This was wonderful, classic and expressive of Provence rose. Glorious sea breezes, floral, wispy red berries and sleek stony minerality. Delicate and fresh, summer in a glass. All aboard. 91+ to 92pts.

Light pink color. Very good, mineral driven, Tart cherry, dry, tannins notable.
Rosé
2020 Clos Cibonne Tibouren Côtes de Provence Cuvée Tradition Rosé Cru Classé France, Provence, Côtes de Provence

This is another one that is tough to put down,; classy, minerally, ocean, spices, citrus and watermelon, spices, wow, this is singing. 91+ to 92pts.

Rosé
2017 Château Simone Palette Rosé France, Provence, Palette
88 points
Deep coral orange color. This was fairly similar to a bottle from a year ago. Big in style, bold red fruits, firm, and dense, citrus and pomegranate, lacks much in the way of nuance. Coming after a string of very elegant wines this was a stark contrast.
Rosé
2014 Chateau Musar Rosé Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
90 points
Always intriguing, complex, contemplative, certainly different from the majority of roses. Needs air and time in glass, needs food to bring it out more, lacquer, nail polish, citrus, rhubarb, blood orange, full bodied rose with firmish tannins.

Definitely getting into it's groove now. Great nose; peach, so bright, floral, lively and lifted. Delicious, but going to get better.

Light salmon color. This was really singing. Dang it has been too long since opening one of these. Finesse and grace, yeast, floral, tart berries, chalk, brioche, lacy and sea shells. Classy.

Oh heck yeah. A bonus red at the end of the night thanks to Matt and Brenda. Stunning aromatics, fleshy, sappy raspberry, bacon fat, funk and damp earth, poised and very long. This is a captivating wine. 93+ to 94pts.

A bonus red at the end of the night thanks to Matt and Brenda. Maybe it was the rose talking, but I found this a bit better than 2 years ago and more interesting. Delivers so much for the price point.

A final bonus bottle at the end of the night thanks to Matt and Brenda. And now we circle back to where it all started tonight. One of the best values and most consistent rose Champagnes out there.
