November 3, 2014 - Finally opened one day before my 50th birthday. One of the world's rarest grapes. It's estimated that barely 2 barrels of Terrantez are made every year in Madeira.
Muddy, drab olive/brown even after passing it through a funnel with a mesh. Right out of the bottle, a great deal of toffee and some volatility. 4 hours in the decanter and much the same. Rather strong alcohol heat. Chocolate, caramel, fruitcake and molasses.
Not quite dessert wine sweet but close to it. Balsamic, woody note through to the finish. Orange peel, much of the same impressions from the nose. Toffee, caramel, fruitcake, prune and raisins. Typical high acidity of Madeira. Very complex. Great length but dries out on the finish. The sort of wine to linger over. The score reflects the taste, but for history, rarity and other intangibles, definitely 100. Quite literally, a rare treat.
