October 10, 2020 - Saturday riesling and farewell (Chicago, IL): From half-bottle. Admittedly a difficult vintage, and I think it shows a little here with some of the flavours coming off a little less than perfectly clean. To my palate, this is readily mature and has a good expression of secondary riesling characteristics, though there is a certain browning tinge to this wine that is less than ideal. There are some white cherry and peach flavours here, and the moderate sweetness here is quite nicely balanced by the acidity. This does have that characteristic Dönnhoff lightness to it; in fact, it's a great bottle of wine just marred by that slight dirtiness.

September 30, 2018 - From a 375. Balanced sweetness and acidity. It's beauty lies in its economy. It doesn't scream it whispers. When it does, pay attention.

March 16, 2017 - This bottle seemed more balanced by acid than the last I tried. A delicious, complex, and full-bodied riesling that needs spicy food or a good cheese to show its best.

September 14, 2016 - Out of 375. Drinking wonderfully at age sixteen. Nose has full aromas of ripe sweet cherries with some peach and spice. Palate is concentrated with sweet fruit that glides across the palate. Fresh finish. In a great spot.

September 14, 2016 - Dinner with Keith at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): From half-bottle. So much Rainier cherry here. The nose shows a bit of fresh green herbs to go alongside that lovely cherry note. The palate is not too sweet, and in fact, as far as my memory goes, this seems to be one of the drier examples of the Auslese (not that this is anywhere close to dry, or even feinherb). Despite all the extract and weight on the palate, this wine never feels heavy. It's elegant and light, and dances over the palate. The acidity here is a bit lighter too, but this is still a very well-balanced wine. And to think these wines don't age...
