Community Tasting Notes 5

December 3, 2011 - This wine is still a cracker. Not sure that it will improve any more, but still drinking beautifully. Typical barossa Shiraz, with strong taste of chocolate, typical of previous vintages of this label. Definitely not in the same class as the '96, but a great drinking wine.

December 19, 2010 - Gone. Too bad. Way past prime.

December 22, 2008 - The bottle description was right on with it's 10yr suggestion. Pours dark with signs of aging on the robe. Complex aromas spill into the air and I try to catch them. Black cherry, lavender, raspberry, mildly herbaceous and spiced (a hint of wintergreen). Medium full body with low acidity and a moderate tannin profile for balance. A complex aroma to palate follow through is complete with addition of vanilla bean clusters and mocha. The finish lasts forever and compels me to sip on. I am impressed to say the least in a wine this old. It was cellared at 70F for all these years. This was a random pick of the night from my cellar and a beautiful surprise. It didn't take long to open up either, pop and pour.

May 21, 2008 - Very interesting wine that I've enjoyed in the past, but just slightly less impressed then others with it. I dissent from many who view this as an Aussie Old World styled wine. To me it is clearly New World, and most definitely fruit forward. The good news is there is so much more with it, and definite herb and spice, leather, e.g. various rhone characteristics on the back end. But no one would mistake this for a Rhone by any stretch. A couple points off for a strange and slightly off-putting jammyness that I did not expect to be there. Fortunately the good overwhelmingly outweighed that by far.

May 20, 2008 - Taylor-Mullens Engagement Dinner (Andy's House): Opened for about an hour then decanted for sediment and served immediately. This may be the last bottle of this remarkable wine I ever see, and I was very glad to try it. Tasted alongside the 97 Clape Cornas with a veal chop dinner and it actually kind of showed it up a bit. This is no fruit bomb, Very complex and integrated, with a meatiness on the back end. Many thanks to Chris for bringing this, it was the wine that first brought me around to Syrah/Shiraz when I was first getting in to wine.
