Community Tasting Notes 6

April 29, 2018 - This was my oldest domestic PN in my cellar, a wine I bought way back in 2006 and it had been resting in my cellar since then. I carry with me from past experience that the wines Wes made were influenced by his desire to make wines that were ageworthy. Even visits to see him many years ago would find us tasting older Clos Pepe wines that had held up well. So, I aged this under that premise. We opened this last night, and the wine had a good chill on it initially. It shows some light maroon tones but if poured blind, I'd not guess something pushing 15 years old. Still maintains a solid fruit presence, once again something that isn't turning into older bones or showing any aged qualities on the palate. Herb, some jammyness and when the wine warms, my only nit is the emergence of some booze/heat. 2004 was a warm year in CA and to me it shows here. If kept cool, that aspect is tamped down and I do think this wine will continue to age. It's fairly fruit centric and the vintage is quite present in that sense. Thanks for the memories, Wes.

November 27, 2017 - From Magnum. The wine is singing right now. Not my favorite vintage but this is developing fine. Still very fresh. Clean red fruits mixed with spice. Wes did a fantastic job on this wine.

July 4, 2013 - Excellent wine. Patience pays off with Clos Pepe. None of the tartness that I have experienced with younger Clos Pepe wines. This was in a great place and will probably stay there for some time. Nice spice on the mid-palate.

March 12, 2009 - Ok, now this is an unusual experience - maybe someone can chime on on what happened here. Bought 2 bottles of this from the winery. Had a bottle about a year ago. It was very good, though darker and bigger than a traditional Clos Pepe. Seemed typical of the 2004 vintage. Fast forward a year. I open this for a nice long decant, because the last bottle needed it. Once in the decanter I noticed something quite strange - the color. The wine is as light as a rose, and I mean a light rose. I give it a few minutes to breathe and take a sip. This wine IS a rose! Super light, smells right, though again, the aromas are subtle. I don't detect any real flaws for a rose...a good amount of acidity, light cranberry and strawberry flavors. Not a bad drink if you are going for a rose.

So, what do people think happened? I've had many Clos Pepe's before, including the 2003 and 2004 V.S. - the storage of this bottle is no different than the storage of the previous bottle, so if something "happend" it should have happened to both, right?
