  November 5, 2016 - I went ahead and reclaimed this cellar slot. I enjoy savory Syrah, but this was a bit like drinking olive juice with a dash of powdered charcoal and incense. I'm trying to class up that smokey streak with my imagination but the wine is simply inferior to other vintages of Griffin's by Pax/Wind Gap and Bedrock. A nice glass right out of the bottle but it got tiring pretty quick.

  September 11, 2016 - Smoked meats and coffee with sour dark cherries and plum, and a greenish structure lurking throughout. The fruit comes out to play with air, but this is still brooding and perhaps closed... or fading? Sweetness from the turkey burger/potato bread/bbq sauce made for a mouth full of flavor. Has a campfire streak -- even Syrah can't hide the 2008 smoke? No longer expecting a renaissance in this bottle.
  
  Update -- kept going downhill after this note was written, couldn't shake that smokey note, score dropped to 88/neutral. Drink soon with food and modest expectations. Had an 07 Castelli from WG recently at a friend's and it was fine/far superior. 2008 Sonoma really was compromised, and the wine critics missed it.

  September 9, 2016 - Decanted. This bottle had lost its fruit, unfortunately. Hoping it isn't endemic.
  
  Tasted again on day two and the transformation was amazing. Fruit is very much still there.
