Community Tasting Notes 21

July 24, 2010 - Finally made it down to that stash of these buried way in the back of the storage locker. They must keep that storage even cooler than advertised, because this looked, and tasted like a young wine. Beautiful ruby color: no sign of bricking. Floral, earthy and tart cherry in the nose. Nicely balanced on the palate. Wow, I did not expect this. Just delicious with grilled salmon. Evolved beautifully over the hour between when opened and devoured. Best of all, 5 more bottles to drink over the rest of the summer!

April 20, 2008 - Tasted over lunch with Ed Kurtzman, generously offered from his own cellar. Have not tasted an AW with this much age and it even showed the older style label. Starting to brown a bit on the edges. Smooth, some pine, clean. Some vanilla tinged strawberry and cranberry.

March 3, 2007 - I put together a vertical of ’02 through ’05 and decided to taste them blind.

All four bottles were opened and double decanted about three hours ahead of tasting. We obviously knew that these were all August West Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard. We did not know the vintage. Order of group finish was 03, 05, 04 and 02.

    2002:
Color is dark purple, the darkest of the four. Somewhat reticent nose of sour cherry. Lacking any earthiness in the nose. The palate shows more sour cherry but seems a bit overwhelmed by the tannins at this point. 90pts.

I don't know if the decline was due to bottle variation or simply time, but this bottle was nowhere near as good as the previous bottle less than a year ago.

September 13, 2006 - Our last bottle - sigh. All I can say is absolutely yummy, from first pour, no decant, to last. This bottle really went in a blink. Beautifully integrated fruit, every sip elicted a "this is such a good wine" comment. Enjoyed with simple pasta. The perfect 30th anniversary wine for us. Thank you to Ed for making such lovely wines.

September 9, 2006 - Fabulous nose that just kept on going until the last bit was drunk. That wonderfully identifiable meaty funkiness that screams CA Pinot for me. The initial taste was a bit rough around the edges but mellowed very quickly, within minutes to the wonderful, seamless elegance that we enjoy with these wines. There was a bit of spritz that we had noted on a previous bottle, which doesn't bother us and quickly disappears. This seems like it is still evolving and I am undecided about when to drink up the last one I am holding.
