January 29, 2024 - An interesting evolution on this bottle. Opened and tasted a bit tight so decanted. Color was medium crimson red, light on the rim. Initial nose was really hard to coax out, all sorts of savory and earthy notes of tobacco smoke, roasted meat, violets. Tannins almost completely sanded away at this point. So far was not too impressed and angling for a 91(ish) rating. But the decanting helped - we had a final glass three hours later and the wine had indeed opened up. While still somewhat savory on the nose, the palate had developed some complexity with perhaps some of the oak helping to provide some nice balance. Would’ve rated that last glass an easy 94, ergo current score. Hard to believe it would benefit from decanting but it did, no question.
