Community Tasting Notes 4

December 14, 2019 - Saturday night drop-in at ES BK. From my cellar. Pop and poured. Drank in my Riedel stemless.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of toasty wood, rocky stones minerality, dark red cherry essence. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), structured medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of woody spice, toasted wood, grilled herbs, rocky stones minerality, dark red cherry essence, red plums. Long structured finish.
Very good quality. Serious structured Pinot Noir that had the folks guessing Barbaresco/Nebbiolo. Ripe vintage evident.
Could have been better drunk with another 4-5 years of age, oh well...

July 6, 2011 - Fresh crystal bright glowing wine of elegance and finesse. Dark cherries and purity. Lovely red currrants with just a tinge of dried earth. Delicious ! Structure

June 7, 2011 - Nose is like white pepper, deep dark berries, and some rootiness. Thick succulent fat red sweet fruit, yet elegant and light on the finish. Tannins are v well balanced and slight medicinal finish, pure and clarity of fruit again.

May 18, 2011 - Burgundy 2011 Day 3: Visit to Domaine Alain Michelot (Nuits St-Georges, Burgundy): I was very taken by this wine - it was as good a young Les Cailles as I have ever tried. Nose was a bit tight and took some time and a bit of air to open up. When it did though, wow... Dark cherry fruit, plums, some peppery spice, all on a kush background of mossy earth. Very deep, very inviting. Lovely stuff. The palate was quite brilliant as well. Super-fine structure, which was a bit of a surprise on this side of NSG, with lovely, lacy tannins managing to feel refined, yet asserting an iron grip on the palate. This was wed to a gorgeously fresh balance that ran through pure, transparent, almost crystal clear flavours of dark cherries sprinkled with flowery notes. An open, fresh finish with very impressive length rounded the wine off. One of my favourites of the tasting - this may not be quite as complete as the Vaucrains or the Chaignots, but it had that ringing purity to it that set it apart. An excellent wine. 93-94
