April 11, 2003 - $4. Grapes have been grown at this estate for 300 years and until recently, it was owned by the Domaines Barons de Rothschild. The estate vineyards are on the highest plateau of the Médoc near the towns of Blaignan, Ordonnac and Prignac. The soil is a sandy, gravelly type. The current owners (who purchased in 1990) have upgraded growing and winemaking practices and invested in new equipment. The cepage of this wine is normally 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Cab Franc thrown in. This off vintage surprised me for its quality. I expected much much less for the price. Dark crimson color. The nose was filled with crushed berry, peanut and tobacco scents. Moderately tannic but really designed for early consumption. Don't buy this to age. Drink it now. It is a rustic wine without the character or grace which can make Bordeaux so special but it was tasty. Medium to full bodied with notes of leather and plum. 86-87 points.
