  October 7, 2021 - Opened at 10am for lunch but had to decant this bottle at restaurant. Drinking this over the 3 or so hours the wine clearly started with a beautiful nose which more of less stayed throughout but just a little less floral with time. The palate was tight but slowly opened up. It was only towards the very end of lunch that finally the beauty in this wine emerged. Just so well made!

  July 28, 2021 - PnP'ed as well. I presume our dear host wanted a comparison; Afterall, Volnay is supposed to take on a lot of Vosne-like characteristics. Indeed, this burst out with a great/bright bouquet of red/black cherries & bits of plumy/chocolatey notes interlaced in-between. In terms of pecking order (or rather, my preference), I'd rate this 2nd in the nose-department, after the Gaunoux Rugiens & before the H. Noellat Beaumonts. Nicely judged on the freshness, that carried & presented the dark/ripe '09 fruits in a most balanced manner, this definitely drank very well too. Should continue to hold and even improve with ageing.

  May 26, 2016 - This is really a glorious bottle of Volnay, bursting from the glass with an expressive bouquet of red and black cherry, cocoa powder, rich tobacco leaf and dark soil tones. On the palate the wine is expansive, nicely balanced and showing the generosity and sucrosity of the 2009 vintage, without sacrificing any energy or precision. Pure pleasure.

  June 24, 2015 - Dinner at Ma Cuisine, Beaune: JC is a Volnay man and Bill likes Coche-Dury's reds, so JC ordered this wine. In fact, JC asked for the 2005 Volnay 1er Cru but Pierre talked him into the 2009 instead ... Beautiful, deep aromatics, expressing the fully ripe fruit. Bouquet of polished cherries, kirsch, raspberries and red plums. 'Damson gin' aromas, said Bill. A sweet, unctuous entry to the palate. Ultra-silky tannins and satiny mouthfeel. The first impression was that the wine was relatively accessible and open but then the massive fruit weight hit you ... This wine clearly needs time to shed some of its puppy fat. Ripe, very rich and concentrated. The wine really, in my view, also needed more energy and cut. At least it's not shut down. In fact, I began to wonder if it will ever close? Or perhaps it'll remain relatively accessible throughout its life? JC, as a guy who likes acidity and is not usually a fan of 2009 red Burgundies, was wondering if he would have been better off with the 2005 ... Nonetheless, overall, a good wine that just needs more time I think ...
