Community Tasting Notes 2

March 30, 2008 - South African Wines with Peter Morales of 57 St. Imports; 3/28/2008-3/30/2008 (Butler College, Princeton University): From a tasting given by Peter Morales of 57 St. Imports.

    COLOR: Medium.

    NOSE: Pyrazine. Not much else.

Medium acidity. Very little tannins. Some residual sugar. Not a great finish. Pazzz

NOTE: During the casual tasting afterwards I tasted several more reds and isolated a menthol/eucalyptus tone in almost all of them. I cannot recall whether this wine had them, because I was not looking for it at the time. I believe this is a common tone in South African wines.

October 3, 2007 - Very nice. Great balance and complexity. Clearly the winemaker's decision to pick up the grapes on the less ripe side is the right choice. Compared to most "New World' Merlot I have tasted, it's clearer, fresher, and more complex. It does not hammer the tastebuds either. ST says 90, so it's 90 for me too.
