Community Tasting Notes 19

February 10, 2022 - Tasted half an hour after decanting: Very deep-coloured at nearly 25 years of age. Sort of disjointed, with intense smoky fruit, quite a lot of sweetness interacting with a slightly strange acidity; and notes of mint and camphor due to alcohol. Rather short finish. Good ingredients here, they just need to come together. Let's see tomorrow.

On the second day it is much more complete. The acidity is no longer weird, and overall it is a nice harmonious vintage port which might be less refined and more loosely structured than, say, a Taylor or Graham, but offers good value and has matured very nicely. given a price which was one third or one fifth of these ports.

Still fine on the third day. I guess it will be all laces in twenty years but still alive.

December 24, 2020 - Sometimes it’s the little things. Opened earlier today, and after roughly 3 hours of breathing this hit the sweet spot, so to say. I didn’t have high expectations, and they were exceeded. In a very good place right now. Perfect balance, harmonious, certainly on the sweet side but oh so joyful! Fully developed to my taste (meaning it probably has a long life ahead of it), with great balance of fruit and developed notes. Some anise notes add to the total enjoyment, as this is a hallmark of VP to me. 90p with my mind, 92p with my emotions

February 7, 2020 - This is a day 1, pop and pour note:
    Cork crumbled on extraction.
Color looks a little faded and bricked.
Aroma is very sweet and fresh fruited.
Palate seems sweet, not overly complex and a little Koolaidey.
Finish is clean though and not at all objectionable.
Not bad, but not a top tier VP.
Neutral on buying again. QPR wasn't bad.

February 2, 2020 - COLOUR: Medium deep purple, slightly towards ruby.
NOSE: Immediately after opening (while also holding close to cellar temperature) a bit muted; mainly mature red berries fruit, a little menthol and a slight granite minerality. With time also dark chocolate, crushed cherries and stones, hemp and that green, herbal note, toward menthol. Just a hint of marzipan. (89p)
TASTE: Mature but very juicy red berries fruit. A moderate level of sweetness, with both acidity and tannins clearly present, but in a very polished form. Well balanced, in other words. Quite dry style. Medium bodied for being a VP, i would say. Lovely acidity; silky and in the background, but powerful. Juicy and almost austere at the same time. Black pepper, but so, so polished and “soft”. As observed by other, there’s some marzipan element here, perhaps the paste of crushed, sweet almonds. Quite fascinating. Benefits from being drunk around 15-16 C. Above that it starts to lose some of its balance, with the tannins and the black pepper becoming perhaps a bit too prominent(?).The exit and aftertaste are nothing if not consistent with the preceding part of the taste experience. Medium long to long aftertaste where, in the end, the menthol gets a slight upper hand. (92p)
OVERALL: This wine appears á point, with the profile of a mature VP while still retaining some of the juicy freshness of a young VP. Very harmonious and well made, it appears. Not at all without sophistication and solid 90(+) material but perhaps not terribly complex. Drinks superbly now. I don’t think this will be one for the long haul, however. Very moreish. TOTAL SCORE for now: 90 points. Will revisit over the next few days.

UPDATE 04.02.2020: Over the last two days, it’s mainly the nose which has improved (+2p); firmer, deeper/darker and more structured. In addition to all that was there when it was opened, there’s now a darker berry fruitiness with blueberries and crowberries. There’s also something leathery-earthy-woody, which I can only try to describe as the wet inside of a recently emptied port pipe. TOTAL SCORE now (91+92)/2 ≈ 91 points.
