February 24, 2022 - A touch regretful that I opened this last night, but such a joy to experience. Entering the 13th year since bottling and the cork was in great shape after popping. The initial rush of aromas that may come across as pungent in a bottle's youth, is now more complex and refined. This time I decided not to decant, and kept the bottle open for a short period before chilling. On the way to the restaurant, bottle opened for slow ox about half an hour, then right into a Pinot glass for the full fun. Both chef and I had a first taste and we both enjoyed how great the first sip was. Over the course of the evening, more fascinating development and it became smoother. Dominant almond butter, almond paste, jasmine, dried flowers, Meyer lemon, Meyer lemon pith and rind, seashore and sea salt savory, perhaps hint of yuzu in there, and a very interesting almost savory yogurt or lactic cream texture that was very compelling. After I posted on social media and tagged the winemaker, he quickly responded and asked (in French) how was it, to my amazement. Thomas actually takes big pride in this bottling, and with a little Google translate I thanked him for such a beautiful wine and how it tasted overall at this stage. It was an extremely lucky encounter, including the fact that I don't think this bottling of Montmain (yes that's how he spells it, singular instead of plural) is exported recently (if you look at cellartracker listings, the last vintage was a while ago). The more recent vintages of Butteaux are quite costly here, but it will be something to pursue. This wine half way through the meal not just became smoother but more elegant, while retaining that signature aromatic bitter aroma. I am reminded yet again why this producer is quite amazing.

July 28, 2017 - Light gold in color. Very expressive aromas of yellow stone fruits, citrus oils, yellow flowers, slate and honey. Medium bodied and viscous palate shows ripe, honeyed orchard pit fruits, good acidity, and a very long, oily and perfumed finish. Fabulous.

September 3, 2016 - Very pale yellow. Classic notes of sea-shells, chalk, green herbs, lime zest and white flowers. Palate shows expansive greenish-yellow citrus fruits and granny smith apples, good acidity and a long, linear perfumed finish leaving behind a strong note of limestone.

August 13, 2016 - Light yellow in color. Lifted and airy aromas of yellow stone fruits, fresh cut flowers, sautéed green herbs and hint of chalk. Quite dense on the palate with ripe crushed peaches, pears, good mid palate sap, good acidity and a long finish that leaves behind a whiplash of herbs and flowers. Lovely wine indeed although it has not aged like a classic Chablis.

July 6, 2015 - Youthful pale yellow. Nose is rich, suggesting mild sweetness on the palate. In waves, mineral (flinty/smoky) and fruity (even tropical). A bit soft on the palate, but very pleasurable.
