December 31, 2023 - Drinking wonderfully - classic Heitz silkiness, blackcurrants and raspberries. Long and deep.

September 1, 2023 - Deep dark center, red rim with some signs of age.
Wonderful sweet nose of macerate black cherries, plums and blackcurrants, smokey and creamy.
Smooth, mature black fruit, supporting tannins, crushed rocks, oak is well integrated, alcohol feels less than the stated 14.5%, great long finish.
Excellent mature Cabernet from an historic vineyard. Maturing well, drinks well now with the intense fruit but will keep on going for many more years (through to 2028).

April 14, 2023 - Heitz purchased this Rutherford vineyard in the early 1980's and began making Trailside in 1989. I haven't had many Heitz wines. The only other one I recall is a 1998 Martha's. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Decanted 2 hours. This was the most advanced of the 3 Cabs opened that night (the other were a Pride and Dunn). Integrated tannins. A well rounded and rustic profile. Notes of blackberry, wet earth and leather. The tannins were supple and this had a soft finish. 92 points.

January 26, 2018 - Tasted blind. Used glass: Zalto. A wonderfully matured Cab with a few more years ahead of it. Notes of desiccated coconut, leather, some cocoa beans, earthiness, well-integrated, noble cedar wood as well as a minty freshness packed around a slightly sweetish core of black cassis fruit. Good attack on the palate, with cassis, blackberry-juice, some earthy notes and cocoa up in front, really nicely integrated 14.5 abv and good acidity going along with it. Fine-grained and mature tannins. Lengthy finish.
Trailside Vineyard is mostly considered as the bolder wine, when compared to Martha's, but this bottle is showing some elegance. 92

Blind verkostet in Zalto Gläsern. 92

November 16, 2016 - Dark, inky and alluring on the nose with a earthy black cherry and blackberry aroma with a touch of chocolate. Bold but restrained, like a race car with a governor, on the palate with flavors of red cherry, strawberry, and raspberry wrapped with a bit of oak and chocolate leading to a nice, smooth finish with tannins rounded by age and sufficient acids to maintain its freshness. Drinking terrifically right now. My first tasting of a Heitz in awhile, but it is a reminder that old school winemaking and letting nature take its course produces a bang for the buck. Drink now or hold for 15 years. I really don't think it matters with this wine.
