February 1, 2012 - Wednesday Night Tasting (Pascal Marchand, Domaine de Chevalier, Chateauneuf) (Dave's House): Popped and poured, followed over approximately 2 hours. Served blind to the other tasters along side Pascal Marchand's Clos Des Ormes from the 2008 vintage. Not quite sure what to say here. This wine is like getting smacked in the face by a 2x4 cut from an oak tree. On first pour the nose bursts from the glass with heavy scents of coconut, vanilla, caramel, smoke, and hiding behind all that, there appears to be some maraschino cherries, strawberries and earth. On the palate, this is actually quite balanced; ample acidity helps counterbalance the sweetness of the oak and fruit, while some fine grained tannin rounds out the moderate length finish. This is really quite modern in style and had the other tasters going to the new world with California and Oregon as their guesses. Overall, the oak here was quite offensive, and we elected to not consume the rest of the bottle. Apparently, only 300 bottles of this were made as per the label. It is good to know that only another 299 people will have to drink this crap for $75/bottle.

May 31, 2011 - Young wine with fruit beginning to show through. Very high acids, medium+ body. dried cranberry, black tea, a little smoke (no vanilla though - this wine gets 100% new oak treatment) with nice tannic structure to age. Very long finish. Did not rate but would guess 90++
