Community Tasting Notes 2

    September 2, 2023 - 13% alcohol.

Evolved, tertiary maroon color. The nose feels very evolved and quite tertiary with aromas of raisiny dark fruit, some savory notes of meat broth, a little bit of earth, light leathery tones, a hint of tobacco and a touch of dried orange rind. The wine is evolved, tertiary and complex on the palate with a medium-to-moderately full body and layered flavors of wizened dark fruits, dried black cherries and ripe red plums, some ferrous notes of blood, a little bit of tobacco, light oxidative notes of salt-cured beef and soy sauce, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of old leather. Despite being over 40 years old, the wine is still impressively structured with its high acidity and rather assertive, moderately grippy tannins. The finish is long, evolved and grippy with a complex, savory aftertaste of wizened black cherries and sour cherry bitterness, some meaty notes of beef jerky and salt-cured meat, light leathery nuances, a little bit of tobacco, a salty hint of soy sauce and a touch of ripe red plum.

At first it seemed the wine was slightly over the hill, but it gained its composure with a little bit of air and finally turned out to be a lovely, classically styled Brunello at its plateau of maturity. The wine is so tertiary that it definitely doesn't call for any additional aging, but it isn't too old - there's still enough ripe, vibrant fruit to keep the wine interesting and fully alive. Although I'm not the biggest fan of Brunello, this was spot on. A superb purchase at 42€.

July 12, 2017 - Porcini, rounded body, savoury sweetness. Tea, lengthy mineral finish. Marvelous. Light but powerful. Black fruits, but more earthiness than fruit. Powerful earthy finish.
