Community Tasting Notes 4

February 26, 2011 - I was fortunate enough to partake in a vertical tasting of every vintage of Owen Roe Dubrul Merlot, 1999 through 2008 (no 2007 vintage) The event was hosted by Owen Roe Winemaker David O'Reiley. At the time of writing (May, 2010) this was the single most incredible wine drinking experience of my life. Every vintage was stunning, world-class, and awe-inspiring. What a treat it was to sip them in order one at a time and focus on the subtle nuances and variations of each vintage. Overall, all of these wines show incredible aging potential with older vintages showing more character, subtlety and finesse. None of these vintages are past their peak and indeed each one would benefit from upwards of 20 years in the bottle. I will copy and paste this introduction to each vintage and then follow with my notes of what I feel where the unique distinguishing characteristics of the individual vintage. The 2000 vintage emerged as my favorite one overall. I loved the strong mocha-coffee-chocolate aromas which also translated over to the flavor profile. Also buckets of ripe blueberries, light and airy on the palate, and finishes smooth and silky. Winemaker David O'Reilly explained that because of the lower acidity and softer structure of this vintage, it is ready to drink now through the next 5 years.

February 21, 2010 - Wonderfully integrated, good fruit center and nice velvety finish. Still drinking great, though this is my last one. Yummy.

October 1, 2009 - Nice wine, toast, good fruit still

May 3, 2008 - Owen Roe Spring Release Party (Ecotrust Building, Portland, OR): Nice wine, good nose of plums, with a touch of olives. Flavors of dark berry fruit, no olives, and some decent acidty, although not as integrated or velvety as the 99. Outstanding - 90 points (Owen Roe DuBrul Merlot Vertical, 99-06).
