July 22, 2023 - Champans is one of my less-favorite premiers crus in Volnay, but as the third largest premier cru vineyard in Volnay, it is one that is frequently encountered. Young, it usually is rather blocky and lacks the finesse and delineation of other top crus such as Caillerets and Clos des Chênes. But in the past 6 months, I've had a 2002 d'Angerville Champans and this wine that show that with time, Champans can turn into something very, very special. (Another bottle of the d'Angerville 2002 Champans last month was very good, but nowhere like the one from this past January).
This wine has now developed a very complex nose with red fruits and underbrush and rust. The mouth is edgier than one usually encounters for Champans with richness and some layering. It should still last many years. Cellared since original release. -

February 25, 2023 - Fresh ruby red color. Fresh and delicious PN aromas in the direction of sour cherries. Elegant and delicious on the palate. Smoother and more elegant, but less powerful, than a Montille Pezerolles from the same vintage that was tasted alongside.

July 12, 2020 - Red fruit, cranberry, strawberry, good nose. Medium+ acidity, medium tannin. Fresh. Enjoyable.

May 2, 2020 - Round, sensual body typical of Champans. Red fruits and beet root. Still a little four-square the way 2002 happens to usually be. Still room for upside potential with further aging. Cellared since original release.
