Community Tasting Notes 11

January 10, 2021 - {cork, 12.5%} Level at base of neck. Cork nearly soaked to the top. Decanted just before service & tasted over an hour. Deep aged garnet colour, with a lovely brick tinge. Intense, fragrant nose, in the house style of vanilla and coconut, but also with some blackcurrant character. Leathery hint too. Medium/full-bodied for age, with medium acidity and faded dusty tannins. Sweetly fruited, with a long, enchanting finish. Flavours follow the nose. Side-by-side with the 1998, this was much more open and mature, softer, with a bigger bouquet but gentler palate. Wonderfully consistent though. Mature but could be kept if the level is good. Coonawarra, Barossa, Clare and Southern Vales (is that McLaren?) according to label. Just look at that alcohol. Wish they still made ‘em like this…

June 28, 2019 - 2 weeks in Australia with a stopover in Singapore; 6/14/2019-7/1/2019 (Singapore, Sydney, Adelaide, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills): From the wine list at the Magill Estate Restaurant. Another favorite from our tasting was the '04 Bin 707 - so once again we were interested in trying one with a lot more age. Very much in the aged bordeaux style with lots of dried leaves and leather, a hint of mustiness and mature dark fruit in the background. Very harmonious and enjoyable.

June 28, 2019 - Return to Aus; 6/23/2019-7/5/2019 (Adelaide, South Australia wine regions, Tassie, Yarra, etc.): The first word that jumps to mind for this wine is crunchy. It's a dead ringer for a nice bordeaux with some age. Lots of earthy notes. Still some fruit, but the secondary characters are dominating. And that saddle oil I often get with wines with age. Fun to get to try.

January 23, 2019 - PnP. Classic Aussie. Eucalyptus for days. Fresh, bright, blueberry fruit, coconut, dark chocolate powder, totally integrated structure, ripe but balanced. A marvel at this stage. Went well with the herb crusted med rare strip steak. WoN vs 83 Dominus, 01 Cos D'Estournel, 08 Flor de Pingus, 12 Sarocka, 99 Rivetti Barbaresco, 06 Antigal One, etc.

    Thanks Al Baby!

November 22, 2018 - This wine is drinking superbly. Rich chocolate flavours, well balanced with soft tannin and subtle over-ripe (spirit marinated?) berry fruits. Lucky for me I have one left.....
