April 2, 2021 - Dark gold in color with a hint of orange/red. Viscous. Not as sweet as I was expecting. Not nearly as much perceptible sweetness as a Sauternes or even other Alsatian SGNs I've had. Drank with a triple berry crumble with ice cream, and it was not a good pairing. The wine itself is beautiful, complex, very long finish. No off notes, like other CTers had the misfortune to experience. No perceptible acidity, though, which I was suprised by. Overall, very enjoyable but not what I would normally think of from an SGN, but it's the first Rangen de Thann I've had and the only Zind Humbrecht late harvest this old.

June 20, 2016 - Leo's Blind Tasting Group - June '16 edition (Back Forty West, NYC): Score another one for the Rangen terroir - even though this is an SGN with lots of botrytis and ripeness, the smokiness and earthy savouriness still comes through and sets this apart from the Heimbourg. It still has those ripe honeyed, apricot, and orange marmalade flavours but there's an extra gear of complexity and depth here with a touch more acidity to give it an even fresher, lighter mouthfeel. Fantastic wine.

December 15, 2006 - Dinner at Bonne Soiree. Copper in color, this wine was not corked but something seemed off. Apricots on the nose, Rangen on the palate and then oxidative and metallic on the back of the palate and finish. No score as this was clearly an off bottle given previous experiences.

August 12, 2005 - Dinner at Zely & Ritz with Fred, Ronnie & Nick. Unfortunately an off bottle. Some Rangen was evident underneath if you looked hard enough, but this was a big disappointment. Not rated.

January 21, 2005 - Dinner at Sawasdee with Jay & Megan. Orange-gold in color, this wine had a very Rangen-typical nose filled with the earthy and mineral elements so often present in wines from this vineyard. There were also lovely dried fruits present in this wine that was very elegant and incredibly well balanced. It was obvious that there was tremendous sweetness in this wine, but in such a way that is was never cloying and beautifully matched with great acidity. Super long finish that after my last sip only went away minutes later when I took a sip of water. A classic that had Jay thinking he has not purchased enough of the '01 version of this wine to age. 50+14+13+9+9 = 95.
