September 12, 2014 - Light red-garnet color. Very complex and herbaceous aroma: black pepper, violets, mixed garrigue, heady strawberry, nutmeg. On arrival, the typical '96 C-R body: acidity slightly tilted up and persistent, with finely grained tannin. Balanced. Intense flavor of mixed red fruits (cherry, strawberry, raspberry), bags of local herb and baking spices. Medium, racy finish. M. Burgaud makes one of the most consistent styles and unique of Cote Rotie in my experience. He manages to produce neither misstep in rough vintages (like this one) nor great wines in the best years; he is merely always on-point. Bottle #3 of three.

July 6, 2011 - Whau, that was my first Cote Rotie and it was like running into Klitschkos fist. Had decanted only three hours and out came a horrible pandemonium of taste and smell. Calmed down by the end of the evening but still was not nice. The day after it had developed, still rustic but nice balanced acidity, tannins and oak integrated, good fruit and finish. This is by no means an easy wine but you get rewarded if you have patience. Let it breathe at least 12 hours. I think it will be much better a few years from now, but will order and try another bottle of such an unique wine in the near future.

December 6, 2010 - Textbook syrah from CR. Really superb. Dark ruby core, as it seems to be always the case with Burgaud.Hard to tell it's 14 years old. Splendid complex nose. There's a lot going on: bacon, violets, black olives, dark fruits, smoke and cedar.
On the palate, it shows the high acidity of the vintage and its lightness. Perfectly balanced, palate matching the nose. The finish lingers forever. Bravo! -

March 23, 2008 - Still very dark color, nice complexe nose of ripe dark berries, earthy complexities. Yet on the palate not as exciting. Nevertheless enjoyable.

October 13, 2007 - Some maturity on the nose. A bit rounder and more polished than the three others. Some leather and black currant. The nose of the flight. On the palate it is more like the 99 than the 00 and 05 in the way that it is a bit rounder than the two youngest. This is clearly more mature. The structure and balance is quite nice. Also good finish with some pepper, tannins and acid. Good wine.
