July 11, 2012 - purple, limited bouquet, thin feeling, cherries and a funky over-ripe vegetal taste on the mid to late palette which was not entirely offputting, just interesting. not expected in this variety. decent wine for $9.

May 28, 2012 - Earthy and elegant, but out of focus. Transparent ruby purple color; earth and green vegetables on the nose, with some dark fruit in the background; dark fruit flavors, especially blackberries and plums, with dark earth and a bit of bitter chocolate as noted by another reviewer; well-integrated tannins and a decent cherry-driven finish. I love malbecs, but this seemed a bit disjointed to me. Still young, though.

December 9, 2011 - Poured off in a glass, the wine looks like a typical Malbec - very dark red. Give it a swirl and it stains the sides of the glass; suck down a glass or two and be careful not to show your teeth to anyone.

The bouquet was black plums, with just a touch of black pepper, and a definite sense of alcohol. This was noticeable enough that I checked the bottle for the the ABV rating, and it was 14.5%. Definitely a little "hot," but although the aroma was noticeable, it didn't bother me at all.

Moving on to the fun part - the tasting - the wine lives up to the high standards that I set for a Malbec anymore. It tasted of black plums and black cherries, with pronounced tannins. The tannins are worth noting because they were unusually strong for a Malbec, but remember that this is a 2010 bottling; give this a year or two and I think it will mellow out substantially. The coolest part was the nice chocolatey finish. I didn't have any dark chocolate handy, but I could easy kill a bottle of this wine and a bar of the Hershey's Special Dark (you know, the large bar!).

One negative that I noticed on this wine was that it lacked the thick mouthfeel that many Malbecs have. It certainly wasn't "thin," but it didn't have that almost chewy feel that I like in a Malbec.

By the way, I served this with blue cheese topped steaks, and the match was fantastic.

I plan to pick up several bottles of this and stash it away for a year or two.
