February 25, 2016 - It features a strong, tasty, noticeably sweet fruit flavour to go with a sense of alcohol (15%), strong acidity and deep dark pleasant farm aroma. Things feel rather raw and definitely not completely harmonious as if it's tending towards alcoholic grape juice a.o.t. wine - but really good tasting grape juice, to be sure, especially when that splendidly wonderful burnt Cabernet aftertaste emerges. There's a saturated, old raisin deliciousness to it that helps to push aside most of the awkwardness. It comes across as a bit on the experimental side as if this winery hasn't been in the biz that long and while they've apparently got some notably good tasty raw material to work with here, they don't seem to have worked out the right formula yet. It's awkward, like they cranked everything up to the max and just let it run it's course with minimal added craftsmanship; like a broken fan that makes a really loud racket, but still manages to provide service when in desperate need; like an over-extended home appliance metaphor. On the plus side, it leaves a very nice fruit flavour aftertaste that's long lasting. To it's detriment, the tannin level is almost non-existent and the mouth feel is watery and somewhat flat. I think the main reason I appreciate it is because of the strength and nice juicy taste of the fruit flavours and associated sweetness, while wishfully thinking that a few more years in the cellar will tame the more awkward elements and create some harmonization. They say that Cabernet Sauvignon doesn't fly in Canada, but here is some good evidence, I think, that it's worth a try. I think you need a healthy dose of curiosity to enjoy this, along with an appreciation of just how strong, saturated and delicious the flavour is, which I consider a notable achievement for a Canadian Cabernet Sauvignon– done right, this is in Napa Merlot territory, IMHO.
