I had very low expectations, and taking a whiff at opening and throughout day just seemed to confirm this was dead.
It wasn't. It wasn't great, but it was pleasurable, and even had some identifiable Haut Brion character. The breeding was there. On nose, orange rind, smoke, subtle leather. Cigar ash emerged in mouth over time, along with a nice, balanced acidity. Sweet sediment. It took a couple of hours for the telltale burnt rubber to emerge and give a sign that the game was up.
I note that even though Broadbent considered 72 to be "cataclysmic", this was apparently the best wine of the vintage for him.
This made me a believer in slow oxygenation, too.
