February 24, 2024 - Bordeaux 2004 - 20 Years On - 33 Reds: All wines tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) 2004 is a mediocre vintage overall, with many pleasant wines, but without the depth of better years. 2) At the top, the vintage produced some classic, old-school wines with lots of freshness and fresh fruit. 3) At the lower end, many wines lacked fruit and ripe tannins, resulting in some astringent and slightly drying wines. 4) An alarming number of Right Bank wines (5 out of 16, no Left Bank wine) were oxidized, including some heavyweights like Petrus, Evangile or Figeac. An unacceptably high proportion of faulty wines. 5) I’m not sure that the 2004 are currently in a good phase, many of my scores were lower than in previous tastings. The question is if it’s just a weaker phase or the beginning of the end. 6) At the top and the only wine >95pts was a layered Le Pin (rated 96pts), with a charming Vieux Chateau Certan, a surprising Issan and Clos l'Eglise, as well as an elegant Lafite sharing second place (all rated 94pts).

TN: Blue and black fruits on the nose, some slight coffee notes. On the palate blue fruit, herbs but not much depth. Quite astringent and slightly drying. With time more time expressive, but with slight heat and still quite a drying finish. The nose deserves a good rating, the rest not. 86pts.

April 19, 2022 - One hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Wine was very aromatic during decant: lots of blackberry. After resting in the decanter, wine was dark purple in the bowl with only slight lightening towards the rim with a moderate halo. Nose was very powerful: plums, blackberries, chocolate and something dark that I could not identify. Very deep fruit and super smooth. Long finish with some Luxardo cherry syrup in the mix. Much better experience than my 11-08-2021 tasting, hence the six-point increase in my score. This was a wonderful wine!

November 8, 2021 - One-hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Internet sources and the Chateau indicate that this is 100% Merlot. Nose was fairly numb during decant. Truthfully, this bottle was a little disappointing. In the glass: wine was clear; still a dark purple, with some lightening towards the rim and a medium halo. After resting in the decanter, the nose was not overly fragrant: Queen Anne Plums, mocha, some vanilla and a little spice. In the mouth, the wine had good weight, fruit seemed deep and balance was nice, but there was something off. Medium-long finish of some lead pencil. I wonder if the dreaded "travel sickness" struck here (I know that is a controversial topic) given the 17-years on the wine and less than 4 weeks since it arrived. I have two more bottles that I will try in 2022.

August 26, 2017 - Medium/full bodied, soft, polished and silky, the juicy dark plums are sweet, ripe and fresh. Add to that the wet earth, licorice and cocoa, with a blast of black cherry in the finish, and you get the picture. I like how this is drinking today.

April 5, 2016 - Highly concentrated and powerful, but still very tight and severely tannic. Maybe a little too ambitious for 2004? Don't think fruit will outlive tannins. Not my taste.
