Community Tasting Notes 4

January 30, 2016 - Moderately pale, translucent cherry red color. Very perfumed and open nose with aromas of savory, cherry-driven red fruit tones, some smoke, a little bit of tar, light earthy spices intermingled by savory old wood notes and a hint of bright sour cherry. The wine is medium-bodied, dry and juicy on the palate with balanced flavors of ripe red cherries, some tart cranberries, a little bit of gravelly earthy minerality, light sour cherry bitterness and a hint of brambly raspberry. The structure is wonderfully there with nice tactile presence, thanks to its high acidity and the quite grippy and not aggressive yet not too friendly tannins. The finish is quite tannic and grippy with bright, pure Nebbiolo flavors of fresh cranberries, sour cherries, some brambly raspberry tones, a little bit of earthy spice, a hint of savory old wood and a touch of tar.

Just as I said last time (Aug 2015), this is a lovely, classic Barbaresco, all about finesse and structure. As a regular entry-level Barbaresco, the wine probably won't gain much complexity with age, but it still feels it will keep for many more years and even might continue to develop a little from here. Score-wise the wine might be at its peak now, however. All in all, a very enjoyable, harmonious and well-made example of old-school Barbaresco and outstanding value at 16,74€. Just lovely.

August 29, 2015 - Pale, clear cherry color so typical of Nebbiolo; however, hasn't still acquired that slightly maroon, aged Nebbiolo tone. Lovely Nebbiolo bouquet of sour cherry, smoke, gravelly earth and dust with aromas of cherry marmalade, dry roses and a touch of old, savory wood in the background. Classic Nebbiolo palate: medium-bodied, dry, tannic and with high acidity. Flavors of sour cherry, gravel, cranberry and smoke with nuances of raspberry and licorice in the background. The wine is not a big and flashy character, but instead quite linear and restrained, yet showing lovely brightness and grippy structure. Intense, dry finish with lingering flavors of sour cherry, grippy tannic astringency, gravelly earth, some baked spices and a touch of old wood.

Not a big and ripe Barbaresco, but instead a lovely example of the more restrained and elegant classic style, that is all about finesse and structure. Despite its 8 years of age, the wine is all but old and tired - I'd say that the wine has reached its plateau of maturity, but it will still drink beautifully after another 8 years or so. However, this is still a regular, basic-level Barbaresco from a regular vintage, meaning that this wine will probably never be a Big and Impressive Wine. The wine is now ready to drink, but there is no hurry with it - it probably won't gain much more complexity with age, but it won't fade away soon either. At 16,74€ this wine is definitely an overachiever and more - I would've never guessed that you could find a good old classic Barbaresco at this price! Very recommended - even at much higher price.

    October 21, 2012 - 2nd day notes.

Strong and vivid color, very transparent though. A bit musky, kind of mean and reserved nose of dry cherry, violets, earth and tar. Light to medium bodied with some fleshy, even meaty fruit. Bright, ascetic and unadulterated. Flavor profile consists solely of dry, sour red fruit. Polished and silky tannins work gently to leave a pleasantly clean, dry feel in on the palate. Once again a Barbaresco that is priced like a Langhe Nebbiolo and also drinks like one.

February 1, 2012 - Decanted for 4 hrs. Translucent ruby red.
Sour fruit nose with dark cherries making way for some raspberry brightness. Violets, slight liquorice, red apple, dried herbs, baking spice, cedar and a touch of glue.
Medium bodied and refreshingly firm palatal feel. Bright fruit (which is particularly nice to see in an -07), some oak spice and a good load of salt liquorice. Not that long or complex in the finish with some graphite and also a tad hollow on the mid-palate, but altogether pretty well balanced.
Hey, this was quite nice! And so cheap, I'm going to stash some bottles for coming years.
2nd day: Aromatically pretty much the same, but structurally more balanced. The mid-palate has even developed some degree of meatiness.
