April 20, 2024 - An Oldie but a Goodie-Tasting at Maison Trimbach (Ribeauvillé, France): Deep yellow/light golden. Also honeyed and fragrant but less assertively varietal than the 2017 Vendange Tardive. Even sweeter than that wine, and in the mouth, at this level of sweetness, it is hard to say that I’d reliably identify the grape save for the fact that it still has some spice and just a touch of finishing cyanic bite. Despite this “de-differentiation”, it is a superbly balanced dessert wine with incredible length. I’ve had the privilege of tasting this 5 times, mostly at the domain, and it has been brilliant each time.

April 13, 2024 - Deep golden, long drops, clear. Honey, red apple, vanilla, rosemary nose. Honey, red apple, yellow pear, lychee, tropical fruit taste. Rich, deep, round and complex with pleasant balance. Great dessert wine, will probably last for years still.

April 18, 2021 - Shared by the host of our restarted Philly centric tasting group. Lusciously rich, vibrant and controlled. Sweet but not cloyingly so. Excellent with a Gorgonzola Dolce. Ripe peach and pear and tropical fruit notes abound. The acidity cuts the sweetness and balances the wine beautifully. Finish has a little beeswax and honey. Delicious! Plenty of life left.

April 17, 2021 - For dessert. On the nose, honey, orange peel, lemongrass. The palate is intense explosion of vibrant honey and tangerine, some almonds around the edges, but just wow! The acidity balances out the sweetness perfectly. This is amazing as dessert but could just as easily go with a cheese plate. Great viscosity and heft. 94/95

August 15, 2020 - Golden with an orange tint. Honeyed, floral nose. Glorious texture without seeming too syrupy. Honeyed exotic fruits but not terribly sweet, clove, fine acidity, and leavened on the back end by typical varietal bitterness and an unusual amount of soil for a dessert wine. The balance is exquisite, especially for Gewurztraminer, which so often seems off kilter. I've been fortunate enough to taste this before at the domain, and it was an even greater pleasure to linger over a bottle at home.

Interestingly, after being open for 24 hours, the aromatics are more varietal with strong floral perfume and lychee, while the balance and mouth feel remain superb. It is so uncommon to taste a Gewurztraminer at this level of sweetness that retains liveliness and does not seem leaden on the palate. This is a great achievement, and it must be one of the greatest SGN's ever made from this varietal.
