November 21, 2022 - Opened and poured into a decanter at a dinner in Philly with a visiting SF at Sally (great dinner by the way, delicious place). This is a super interesting wine made in the style of Amarone (grapes air-dried etc.), but with a mixture of heritage and almost extinct Italian varietals (sometimes 15) from Zyme in the Veneto region. Really, really interesting and quite closed still at first sip. But as the dinner went on this opened up spectacularly in the decanter into some sweet coffee-like notes, along with some beautiful red cherry and mint that left a fresh and timely finish on the palate. As the wine opened up more there were jammy notes of berry and just an exquisite, yet powerful balance to each sip. Definitely will age into even more impressiveness in the next ~5 years I would think. Either decant for a couple hours now or hold for a few more years! Excellent and very unique wine.

November 19, 2022 - Brought by cyclist to a delicious dinner at Sally’s in Philly with our wives. On the nose and palate, initially pretty restrained with notes of dark roast coffee, scorched earth, mixed dark berries with lighter notes of red cherries and black currants, mixed herb bouquet with fairly intense angularity. Medium dark purple, full bodied, thick legs. Intense acidity and tannins, pretty tough off the pour but balancing out well during the 90 minutes or so this was in the decanter and we consumed it, no heat. VG+ complexity, VG++ intensity and persistence. Well, if there’s anything I enjoy more than someone bringing a really good, interesting wine to a tasting, it’s someone bringing a wine like that I’d never heard of. I’ll confess that I gave cyclist a bit of a fish eye when I saw the label, with what looked like a wine streak down the front with artwork done by someone’s (gifted) kid. I was captivated by cyclist’s explanation of the wine, and even though it comes from the Veneto and has a good portion of corvina which I gather goes through the appassimento method, this didn’t taste anything like an Amarone to me, with the fruit really trailing the tannins and acidity and little of the sweetness and exoticism I find in Amarones. As cyclist captures well, with time, this did relax, with far more fruit coming through, although this will be no one’s idea of a supple, let alone, soft, wine at the moment. That said, it was a fascinating drink, tasting far younger than its years, and something that, not only could I not place varietally, but I, as a virtual mouthpiece for the Italian wine industry, would have a hard time placing as Italian. This really excelled with the small pizzas, at this point, for my palate, more so than on its own, but I’d welcome quaffing it anytime, with much of anything, particularly if it had some air. The last glass was clearly, for me, best, so if you have a bottle, I’d let it keep sleeping, but if you do want to crack it, I’d give it at least a couple of hours of decanted air. Without familiarity with this bottling, I’m reluctant to prophesy windows with much certainty, but I’m guessing that this is at least a couple-few years from its apex, and it should hold that for some time. This night was a bit of a transposition of tastes, with me bringing a Quivet LPV, knowing how much cyclist appreciates Mike Smith, but this absolutely blew that away. Already great, the only question is whether this becomes truly exceptional. I wouldn’t bet against it. Thanks again, cyclist, for a great pour and a really fun evening! 96++

August 30, 2018 - MoT Masterclass - Gems of Amarone and Valpolicella (Singapore): Here the palate was a bit sweeter than in the 2007, also felt a touch oxidative. Rich and ripe, good acidity, dark fruit, dried meat.

August 25, 2018 - Matter of Taste, Amarone Masterclass. Mid garnet. Quite dry rather than sweet. Nice concentration, not heavy. More fruit forward than the 2007 with enough acidity for a nice balance.

June 14, 2017 - The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis), coffee, black pepper and chocolate. It tastes like blackberry. The body is full. The wine has leathery texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity. Absolutly perfect!
