July 21, 2023 - It is certain that when it comes to wine, the Jura is quite unique. But even if Vin Jaune, the yellow wine aged under a yeast 'veil' of Chateau-Chalon has become an acquired taste of sommeliers everywhere, its style draws some inspiration from Sherry, one of world's oldest recorded styles. Vin de Paille, straw wine , where grapes are dried on straw mats, also finds counterparts all over Italy and Spain. And than we come to Macvin, a style that is certainly 'unique' but not certainly 'wine'.
    .
Simply put, Macvin du Jura is grape must fortified by a neutral spirit. There is no fermentation involved. So,in my oppinion it is more of a "grape drank" than wine. Suffice to say, curiosity piqued.
    .
First thing noted is only 12.5% alcohol, putting it with standard table wines and way below other fortified grape beverages. Notes of golden raisins, rye spice, wheat, caramel, peach cobler, dates, cloves, cooked apples. While maybe not exactly wine ,still eons from putting vodka in your Welch's. I honestly found this wine delicious, fresh over the course of four days, and a pleasant pairing for foods and as an apero. Yes, there is sugar in it. It's juice. But the drank was still well in-balance between sweetness, decent acid ( closer to medium than medium plus but still) and rich fruit flavors. If you enjoy (or can tolerate) some sweetness, definately give this flavorful beverage a try.

September 13, 2021 - This is really lovely, and a distinct step up from all but the best Pineau des Charantes. The nose offers up notes of stone fruit, coupled with more volatile notes more typical of vieux marc. On the palate, the balance between sweetness and acidity is exquisite, and the overall length is long. This would make a wonderfully unusual aperitif, and would also pair beautifully with any plum-based dessert that is not too sweet.

October 10, 2020 - Great character to this, really sherryish note upfront with some walnut and orange peel notes; something Madeira-like to it too, really smoky and peaty with a strong rancio note. Heaps going on. Elevated sweetness on the palate, big viscosity and texture to it with a slight bitter almond note to finish. Powerful fruit, huge length. Delicious.

January 3, 2020 - Jura as a region always implies a touch of funkiness and that was true here as well. It's almost a hint cloudy. And the sweetness is a bit more muted and counterbalanced somewhat. It's a nice wine, but to me not as good at the others we were trying.
