March 8, 2024 - Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): Another surprisingly accessible bottle of Lafarge tonight (seriously, what's up with that?!). The fruit isn't as perfumed and intense as the 1996, and there's a relatively sterner structure here, though the tannins don't feel overbearing here, despite the relatively charmless vintage. The fruit here also feels more red than black, and despite the accessibility of this bottle now, it feels like there's still plenty of gas left in the tank for aging. I'd certainly love to see where this goes with time to further soften its tannins.

December 16, 2021 - Lafarge and d'Angerville study (Chicago, IL): I didn't care too much for this wine initially. It showed a little muddied, some black fruit, a little bit of menthol, and left you with a mouthful of tannins. So I set it aside and revisited this a course or two later. It had changed a lot. The fruit was far more sweet and helped to divert attention from the big tannic structure (although that never diminished over the evening). There was also some earthiness that actually cleaned itself up over time as well. And with the other older Lafarge bottles tonight, it was just abundantly clear that these wines needed at least a few hours of air to show their best.

November 10, 2021 - Decanted for 1 hour, showing some sediment so recommend decanting. Black, red color. Beautiful nose, some cherry spice and an earthy with fennel aroma. Lightly Sweet palate, crisp and drying with a little bit of a hard texture that works with food but is a little jarring on its own. Clenched finish. This is a fun wine that is in the zone for a 1995.

July 15, 2020 - Late in the evening and not a ton of notes but this was good and a big hit at the table. Maybe a tad bit hard as some 95s can be but great fruit and classic volnay depth.

April 30, 2020 - Volnay 1er Cru Virtual tasting (Planet Earth): In 07/01/95 vertical. Nearly fully mature with black and red cherry, cooked spice and earth. Still a little more tannic on finish that I'd consider perfect, but that is the vintage coming through clearly. Very good now. Similar to the 2001.
