  May 19, 2012 - Santa Cruz Mountain Trip (Windy Oaks, Alfaro Family, Big Basin): Tasted at the winery. I found this to be a bit syrupy and thick. Deep ruby color. Lots of spice and licorice on the nose, with a little bit of funk. Strawberry and licorice on the palate. There was a slight sweetness to the wine before I got hammered with tannins. The finish was all funk and barnyard. This might have suffered from having to follow the Garys’ Pinot, but it just wasn’t appealing. It might come together with time and I jotted down "has potential," but it's just all over the place right now.

  November 29, 2011 - This is a tough one. This is one had so much complexity and changed so much over time it's hard to pin down. This makes me think it should cellar either well or terribly! Upon opening, aromas of black pepper, camphor, tar, gravel, and overwhelming aromas of sour fruit and burnt rubber. I started out with a 79 point rating. With time, deep blue fruits, more gravel / pavement, plum, hoisin sauce. On day two after 24 hours open, it's rounder, still a little sour, but the fruit has come to the front now. Definitely had the structure to stay open and shine. I'd say drink 2013-2017 or so.
